Arcades were popular in communities at had a lot of minorities. The “pop a quarter in and have a good time with your peers” sort of culture that carried over to casual/friendlies matches is one of the best part of fighting games. Yeah there are a lot of smelly nerds in the FGC, but as a community that evolved mostly through the strength of many devoted local scenes, it’s a much more organic niche / collective than say, league. I say this as somebody who plays both
