There is no story. Just that holding potential combinations of number in my head while trying out which ones work is impossible for a nigh-alzheimers ridden brain.

Virtue's Last Reward is a good sequel in it's own right and the escape rooms are the best in the series.
The issue stems from the game being much bigger, which leads to more repetition among routes.

It is debatable if DR 2 or v3 is the best Danganronpa game, but DR2 is a wild ride regardless. I highly recommend it, especially since you beat 1 and don't outright dislike it. Ultra Despair Girls is also really fun despite being that weird SC cheap CG.
I personally like VRL more than 999, but of course it is not without flaws. ZTD unironically shat the bed though. The issue is that VLR leads into ZTD and almost cannot be viewed as a standalone story.

I will say, at least this game let you jump around the game's timeline unlike the original cut of 999.
I get that one of the bigger twists works better on DS, and I get that not everyone likes the voice acting, but fml I held the B button for hours just to get through dialog after dialog I've already read up to that point just to get some of the other routes. If I could skip like a 1/3 of the game just to start making decisions again for alt routes, I'd take that in a heartbeat.

He said in an interview that he got bored of the story he had written for ZTD, because iirc he wrote VLR and ZTD at the same time and it took like 5 years for the third game to release after the second. So he rewrote pretty much everything.
No source because I don't remember where it was maybe someone else does.

999 is probably my favorite story from a videogame ever, I'm scared to play the sequels in case they retroactively ruin my perception of the first game.
