Sonic Forces was such a firm fuck you to the fans. I've said this so many times, and I'll keep saying it because I'm still pissed off: literally all they had to do was slightly tweak the Generations formula. They had this golden framework to build off and make the perfect boost game, but they were arrogant and they failed. No one wanted more linear levels. No one wanted easier enemies. No one wanted a derivation of Green Hill. Tails cowers in fear at Chaos 0, despite single-handedly beating Chaos 4 in SA. It's just not right.

like even putting aside my classicfag bias it just screamed all the worst parts of sonic 06 (edgy story/setting taking itself too seriously) but combined with all the worst parts of the modern games (serviceable but completely mediocre boost gameplay, characters that treat everything like a joke) and boy howdy did it deliver on that along with a nice dosage of shoehorned in classic sonic stages which played just as bad as they did in generations and the dumb custom character gimmick that, like the boost sections, wasn't outright horrible but sure wasn't really all that fun.
I don't hate Forces, it's okay. But okay is the worst thing I can say about a game. Even some objectively trash games like Sonic 06 can be enjoyed unironically if you use your experience to try and see what they were aiming for but missed. Forces didn't want to be anything and it succeeded at not being anything.

it does matter though. In the long term (which is the game sega's playing with sonic). If games are received poorly, even if they sell well, producers will pull support. Having one financial/commercial success then 8 failures afterwards because people didn't actually like it is just death for your brand. Look at valkyria chronicles. 2 sold well, piggybacking off of the success of one. It was so bad it killed the series when 3 came out and no one bought it. Then revolution and 4 came out as a last ditch attempt at IP revival and there was STILL a bad taste in people's mouths.
