No. It simulates reality and lets you make a more vibrant living world because of the different types of drops you can get from monsters. It's also a good addition to only having "beat up this same monster 1000000 times until it drops wahtever armor you want," and if you had to choose between the two, crafting is better.

That being said, crafting can only be as complex as a gacha game (i.e. shit) so should all be automated.

I hate crafting as well, whenever a game has crafting I either ignore it or cheat myself 9999 pieces of whatever material I need.

Love the game. Just shame it's such a low-budget indie game. Maps are too small, voice acting is bad, settlement building feels too restrictive, zombies are cartoonish, the random survivor settlements just suck, no challenge to human NPCs, the zombie spawning system is just awful, having them spawn in a visible circle around you...

Imagine having a walking dead-style game built on the base features of State of Decay, but with an actual budget. A huge map, millions of zombies, make a base where you want, have actual, dangerous human factions that matter like the Saviors, ...

Dragon Quest XI has the perfect crafting system I've ever seen. Not only it is useful as fuck, but also fun and sometimes challenging.

I don't fully disagree but some games handle it well, like how you can access unique explosives and ammo in NV

I don't hate State of Decay but it just feels like I'm playing a tech test. I get it's just a AA game but a bigger budget could have gone a long way. I had more fun with it than other Xbone games like Crackdown 3, somehow it manages to be worse than the ARMA 2 DayZ mod though.
