Full-lenght VNs require easily over twenty hours of reading, often going to 40. You can finish DDLC in like four hours.

Because the West can't actually stand the idea of playing a VN, it always has to have a super wacky or scary twist. "Popular" Western VNs need a gimmick so the author can go distance themselves from the icky yucky idea that the nasty pervert japs had, they need to make it UNIQUE and WACKY and a big joke. That's why western VNs that are "popular" are shit like Dream Daddy, DDLC, or that one VN with Jontron and ProJared. It's gotta have a gimmick because 'ew gross I can't have a genuine passion or idea for this genre'

DDLC was free and did well with streamers and ironic weebs because it was really short. The amount of people that would actually sit down and read a VN that's even medium length at 10-30 hours long is two orders of magnitude lower even if it were free. For whatever reason EVNs like to hide behind multiple layers or irony like all those dumb "my girlfriend is a panzer tank" ones or try to be some all inclusive but horribly written pile of shit so nobody will take them seriously because they're all too gimicky.
There is a western market for VNs since JAST has been selling them for like 20 years now, but it is and shall remain a very niche one. The western market on PC isn't in a great place either since the only eroge that tend to sell reliably are gameplay focused titles, moege, and nukige. Practically anything else won't make money and established companies like to play things safe since there's not enough sales to give any kind of wiggle room.

Because there isn't. Nip releases are 80 bucks, and they sell enough copies to keep the lights on. Translating games that were already padded in terms of word count is a mammoth undertaking, there's more text in most VNs than a few real games.

So you're looking at releasing a game that probably came out a decade ago, at a budget price, to an audience of people who are all savvy enough to pirate, who have all been pirating your games for the past decade.

These games have no fucking market in the west. If you're lucky, they'll break even. Even when they bring over titles that have a bit of gameplay to try and trick casuals, sales are poor. Games like 999 and Death Mark are basically unheard of.

This is self-defeating, I don't buy any of MG or JAST's nukige because they're all the most bland, boring shit imaginable and any doujin game I can get off DLSite for 1/3 the price is guaranteed to be infinitely more interesting and engaging and fappable.
