Fodlan is an inherently broken society. This is directly the Church's fault.
Edelgard's complaint with the church is not just simple revenge for the loss of her family and torture she undergoes. Rhea wasn't directly involved in her situation. Her larger problem is that the church, through Rhea, has made crests the absolute focal point of a human's place in society. Why did Rhea do this? Because Rhea is Seiros, and Seiros committed genocide against a highly advanced civilization because they weren't dependent on Sothis, her mother. This turns them into what we see today as TWSITD. After that act, the remnants of that society corrupt the human hero Nemesis and convince him and some other humans [who become the nobility of Fodlan] to take power from the gods. The crests are not a divine gift from Seiros; they were taken from the gods. The problem is that this lie means that individuals who have crests are considered "blessed", directly leading to nobles experimenting on children and eugenics becoming socially condoned. People with crests are innately worth more than those who don't have a crest. This directly leads to ruined lives like Lystheia, Sylvain and his brother, Edelgard and her family, etc. Rhea also does experiment on people with the express goal of creating a person she can kill to bring her mother back, hence Byleth. Other organizations that have tried this in Fire Emblem include such luminaries as the Grimleal and the Loptyr cult.
This is revealed in the GD route, but basically after Seiros genocides the ancient civilization, the remnants of that society convince Nemesis, at that point a great human hero, to go and slaughter Seiros' entire family alongside what are called the Ten Elites. They make divine weapons from the bodies of the dragons and use the blood to gain power, which is the crests. Seiros wipes out Nemesis and the 10 Elites, then convinces the world that the 10 Elites were allied with Seiros, not Nemesis.

As such, its a case of some evil actions [particularly her attempted assassination on the other house leaders, and the always intended to be temporary alliance of convenience with those who slither in the dark (we see that she turns on them once she's in power)] committed to achieve a fundamentally righteous goal.

Many of the students at the academy don’t have crests and go on to be highly influential people, and even some students with crests like Annette didn’t get into the academy on the merit of their birth but rather by extremely hard work.

I played Beagles first. I realized by chapter 4 that she was completely irredeemable. She’s a pretty complex character, so it would take several play throughs to learn everything about her and why she’s so shit, but the long and short of it is that she blatantly doesn’t give a shit about certain things that she claims to deeply value.

For example, during Edelgard’s and Dorothea’s support conversation Edelgard goes out of her way to shit on Imperial Nobles. Now this is a viewpoint that Edelgard expresses at other times to her personal problems with them, but here she explicitly states that the class system should be abolished entirely and that their society should become a meritocracy, an opinion that wins over Dorothea so well that she suggests they might fuck someday.

The problem is that this isn’t true. Eldegard has no intention of giving up the throne herself. All she is doing is trying to manipulate those around her into became heavily invested in her bullshit in the hopes that they will fight and die for her goals.

This is where the Griffith comparisons come from, I think. She doesn’t actually care about the state of the continent or doing what’s right. She’s obsessed with this vision of accomplishing her dream, regardless of what she has to sacrifice to get there.

You can't expect Yea Forums to understand the importance of accuracy, for them so long as it's in the same ballpark rewrites are fine and dandy. It's that neo-western culture of shunning perfection and being happy with decent results. It also helps that it's a vidya game, so the dialogue and writing never gets complicated enough that this ever gets them context errors down the line which is what happens in actual novels or articles.
