I'm really apprehensive about Arise. It looks like they saw the positive reception to Berseria and just assumed people liked it because it was edgy, and they're just gonna make it all grimdark and remove the lighthearted fun adventure vibe the older games had.

Tales has gone downhill since Symphonia, of those I have played.
Abyss was awful storywise and used terrible jargon on terms with Final Fantasy XIII.
Xilia had the heroes siding with anti-magic Nazis at the end who all were willing to commit genocide to turn their light bulbs on.
Zesteria was just bland.

However, it is not only Tales of. Final Fantasy has not made a solid entry since 12, Star Ocean had the worst plot twist of gaming history in 3, so bad it retroactively destroyed the first two games for many people. So many JRPGs are being destroyed by their creators.

Somehow Disgaea and other NIS titles are staying strong, but that is because NIS is nuts.

Tales has always been the first thing that comes to mind for a 6.5 - 7/10 series. I've played about 5 of them and they were all boringly average. I imagine the first one was too.
