DmC: Devil May Cry is underappreciated

I think this game deserves to be regarded better. I don’t think it’s a perfect game by any means, not even as good as it could have been, but there’s plenty to appreciate in it.

Sure, the story is trash, there’s no argument there; the writing is poor even when it comes to its own internal consistency, but hey, at least it’s the so-bad-it’s-good kind of bad. Plenty of memes have come out of its silly writing and dialogue, and it provides a perfect example of what not to do.

This version of Dante is still the one with the most weapons at hand (DMC5’s has more weapons, but 3 of them are based on 2 of the basic 4). They might be a bit less deep than the usual ones, but combined they give Dante about the same number of input attacks as DMC4 Dante, and many combos. The angel/demon modes universalized delay combos, meaning you could mix what your combo ends were with all weapons. Each weapon is also unique and has its own fun gimmicks. The guns are less fleshed out, but they also have a couple extra things, mostly taken from Gunslinger.

Not all of the decisions are good, of course. Royal Guard is sorely missed in this game, although it did attempt to fix that by reintroducing parrying. The colored enemies are restrictive, but to me they occasionally provided a chance to vary my combos. As an attempt to revamp the formula of the series’ gameplay it could’ve been much worse. Frankly, I’ve never been a fan of directional inputs, as they’re kinda clunky, though they provide unparalleled depth to the moveset. Vergil’s DLC provides an example of what a single weapon can do with a system likes the reboot’s, and this resulted in DMC4:SE lifting most of reboot Vergil’s moveset to expand on its own version of the character to good effect. So there’s potential for some of the reboot’s ideas, provided they’re on the right hands and have the right vision behind it.

And talking about Vergil’s DLC: to this day it’s still the only game that has provided the character anything like it. None of the bonus playthroughs of the Special Editions, the reboot gave Vergil a story, an arc, and protagonism. The execution was not the best, particularly when it comes to the levels, but at least it had the right idea. And its version of Doppelganger was much better than DMC3’s, made good use of the angel/demon mechanic, and has been satisfactorily implemented in DMC5’s Vergil boss.

I find most of the game to be at least decent. The platforming sections might simplistic be a bit tacked on, but they never gave me trouble or felt janky. Some of its levels, the disco and the Bob boss in particular, provided good spectacle and were interesting to play through. The OST might be a very subjective opinion, but it didn’t come off as cheap to me. The camera never gave me any trouble, which is less than I can say to the games previous to it, which had a hard time transitioning from the fixed angle camera of the original. The enemies (outside the color gimmick) were never particularly annoying, unlike a good number of them in DMC3 and 4. The Definitive Edition even fixed many of the problems with original release and allowed it to be played closer to the mainline series.

These are my thoughts on the matter. I think DmC: Devil May Cry ought to be regarded as a full part of the series and not a failure that should be forgotten and hidden, a part of the history of Devil May Cry. After playing it and playing DMC5 I can see (and am glad to see) its influence in it: from its aesthetics, to its enemies, to its style announcer and finish camera, to its camera. I don’t find trolls calling DMC5 “DmC2” to be grating, because I don’t absolutely dislike the reboot. I can understand the people that do however, as its PR was handled in the worst way possible given what it was trying to do; but now that DMC5 is out I hope bygones can be bygones.

Why am I not surprised?

Any dev that espouses retarded lefty bullshit doesn't get a dime from me

The only people the regard dmc highly are autistic weebs and not the functioning kind. It's a crappy hack and slash with a stupid story. If it was made by western devs you would regard it as the crappy game it is.

>comparing cherry-picked elements based on what some incel basement dweller thinks is objectively good or bad
I want to believe you're just one retard on social welfare and thus with enough time for posting this garbage over and over again because I can honestly not imagine there's enough people with enough negative IQ to genuinely believe the quality of a game can be quantified in a way this "graphic" attempts to

tldr the game was ass but i kind of liked the scifi stuff it used, i wish the mainstream games would've done it instead though.

I hope this is copypasta because imagine trying to convince people to play your dead game when there's the mainline

The wojak was just a joke image.

>If it was made by western devs
But it was.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to play it.

Japanese games are awful weeb get over it. Go hug your anime girl pillow and feel bad about your awful taste in video games.

Go away diego ur retarded reboot isnt coming back, not in a million years.

I never implied it was, or that I wanted it to. DMC5 is absolutely my favorite in the series and I want DMC6 and/or some Vergil DLC.

I don't know what you're angry about.

sorry to burst your bubble but it doesn't take someone to be a weeb to be able to see and point out your retardation

Ok Diego, you're not the one mentioning DmC in the threads all the time?

I unironically like DMC2 more than DmC.

There were certain things I liked about it. It was very pretty and the not-fox-news level was kino af. It was way to goddamned easy though, I'm not even good at character action and I beat it on the highest available difficulty without dying once when I first played it.

Doing things ironically and finding something funny are completely different things.

>Best selling DMC without a SE to back it up
Heh.

Well, it isn't. I think I've even argued against that guy and his delusions.

Journos and retards keep on trying to say that DmC was great, and somehow the story wasn't a stupid trainwreck that took itself extremely seriously. It was simpler, slower and easier than DMC3 or 4, and the presence of the color-coded enemies is so blatantly against the free-form combo creation DMC thrived on it is hard to believe anybody ok'd it.

>Worst story
>Worst dialogue
>Worst dante
>Worst bosses
>Worst gauntlet weapons
>Worst guns
>Worst visuals
There's more but in my opinion these are the greatest flaws the game has. I'm comparing It to 3,4, and 5 and less so 1 because we can all agree that 2 was dog shit. The only redeeming factors this game has is that Aquila and Osiris are at least unique and somewhat fun weapon designs. The gameplay is also just fine but inferior to 3,4, and 5 and any character action game that has the "You can't properly harm this enemy without this weapon" bullshit in it is bad.

I'm glad it existed though. If it weren't for Capcom and Inafune fucking it up with their decision making, we wouldn't have had DMC5.

>could've just made TS angel+jump and RG demon+jump

If they didn't reboot it, we might have been on DMC6 by now.

HELLO MY NAME IS DAVID DELAUTOUR

BOOM

Capcom went full retard by the time COD was the biggest selling games. They probably would have thought that because DMC4 didn't sold 5 mil it meant that people weren't interested in DMC, instead of blaming themselves for rushing development and releasing half of a game.

>>"Devil" Trigger is just Donte with Dante's color palette
Fucking hell, why didn't they put a "angel trigger" and "devil trigger" with different stats and different looks, while a "nephilim trigger" is a mix of both plus a few new perks? How could they fucked up a cool potential for design?

>He's half-angel and half-demon in the reboot
>Devil Trigger exists, Angel Trigger never even mentioned
Did they forget mid-development or some shit?

Oh yeah and that. Thanks.

Devil trigger was supposed to be a nephilim only thing, I think. Which is why you need to press L3 and R3 at the same time for it, instead of a more reasonable input. It makes it even more confusing considering Vergin has DG somehow and somehow he's much weaker than Donte.

The game has no consistency at all with it's themes. It makes absolutely no sense why sometimes get angel weapons from demons, they also make no sense why they are monumentally different from the design of the boss and their movesets.

>Donte has tattoos for E&I
>implying they are part of his powers like Rebellion
>E&I don't transform like Rebellion
>despite having a complementary color theme
>Donte somehow loses them at the start of the game
>they also don't look like real guns and have no magazines

I noticed Mundus really looks like them when inside of that "blob", which is weird since Mundus still is a human looking demon, except he has blue veins. And I think Vergil and Dante don't having similar powers is another fuck up, their DT feels like two complete different things.
They could had slapped some spectral wing on them as the angel side and make their devil side just pull parts of the enviroment and enemies to form a exosqueleton.

I'll be honest. DmC Devil May Cry storywise wouldn't be a bad game to continue off of AS long as they go satire with their setting of squirrel jizz, the neocon and conspiracy people, and Dante grows up from his experience in the 1st and doesn't take it serious like everyone else does around him.

They should also flush out more shit about Dante's father and his mother and what in the fuck are the angels even doing while the Demons are ruining shit. DmC Devil May Cry has potential to be as fun as the mainline series.

Tl;dr, fuck off zoomer

>like them
Funny considering he should look like Sparda and Sparda demon form is some fucking octopus. There is even octopus Mundus concept

According to an interview with Itsuno, NT thought Donte transforming into a devil was too much fantasy.

Isn't DmC the only DMC game with "must style" or whatever it's called and being able to turn the timer off in BP (other than 3, as there was no timer)?

Yep
But you can have both mode and timer off in 5 with mods (fuck off todd)

>Dante's father
Here's your legendary dark knight bro

Attached: DMC-DevilMayCry-2013-07-31-13-10-02-24.jpg (1920x1080, 295K)

The game is fundamentally bad and had to be fixed with the "Definitive Edition" to actually be deemed as a mediocre game.

It's shit, Capcom makes a lot of bad decisions.

I wonder if it was just an artistic representation, or his actual form.
I think it would had been better if Eva was the one to take them away and wipe their memory, while Sparda took on Mundus and his army. It would even explain Verhil meeting Eva in hell.

>Game about demons and angels
>Protagonist and his bro that are half angel and demon, just changes color as their true form
What were they thinking?

Well, considering there is Sparda's demon form in game and I believe Sparda and Mundus are blood brothers(?)
Guess DmC Eva fucked an octopus. I believe it's due to a total blend of their initial concept and final product.

Worse They Live isn't a much better starting point than ground zero, honestly.

>It's shit, Capcom makes a lot of bad decisions.
I wonder if they do it on purpose. 2 was shit but 3 sold well, 4 was half of a game and then DmC sucked but 5 still sold well. Maybe they do it to get people hyped about finally getting a real polished game after Capcom shit on them, like an abusive relationship.

How would reboot Nuro look like? Considering Donte is like bootleg Nero.

Vergin would have left Kat pregnant and she would die giving birth to him leaving Donte to raise his wife's son. He'd look like a younger version of 4 Nero or 3 Dante.

A snapback to compete with Vergil's Fedora

Any of your heard of the sequel planed by NT? I will tell you
>Vergin became the demon emperor
>Demons are on the lose and humans are still caught in the chaos
>Kat and Donte are fighting against some demons to protect some survivors
>A kid is jumped by a demon
>Kat hugs the kid and was about to get hit
>Time suddenly stop and only Donte notices
>Angels shows up from the skies
>One of the angels appears in front of Donte and says he is Eva's brother, Donte and Vergin's uncle
I don't remember the rest, but this was the main idea of the game according to one of the devs, and the main plot was Donte getting more powerful to fight against Vergin.
He also confirmed that Vergil did died and went to hell.

When Vergil said "blood brothers" I thought it was like "war brothers" but I not my suspecions. But Mundus and Sparda being related but being completly different doesn't make sense, even more when Donte and Vergin true form looks like Mundus true form, when in fact they don't even slightly ressemble their father.

They were gonna make dramatically worse DMC3 knock off a second time?

DMC might have reached really high numbers by now if they didn't waste time with the reboot desu.

>underappreciated
That's not the word for it. Disproportionately or overly hated is more like it. People like it but those who hate it swarm against those people and torrent their hate upon the interlopers with all the hello Tammeems and muh style change on the internet. It is a disproportionate and strange hate, specially since DMC5 is a thing. Why bother when you already have what you want? Just makes you come off as petty and juvenile. But, I guess that is the kind of place this is.

I think this is the second time you correct me in two days.

It would be the same shit, except Vergin would be the new Mundus, and if I not mistaken, Vergin would BTFO of Donte to near death.

Because fagets keep bringing it up even when it's dead and gone instead of just talking about 5.

Say what you will about DmC, but the disco level was amazing

>Reboot DMC
>they don't decide to go with the Tony Redgrave origins and instead just go with the generic "I don't remember who I am" story
Why were they retarded? It would've been perfect, they could've finally put Enzo and Nell in the games, what a waste.
And I don't know what was the point of two dodge buttons, one of them could've been royalguard and the other could've been trickster.
And gunslinger is fucked beyond hell, in fact all the guns were pretty boring.

Attached: kygb77jiytp21.jpg (564x797, 45K)

That and Bob entire level(the upside down world and his interactible program boss).

I liked the music and gimmicks, but the visuals were eye blinding at that level. Couldn't they just make the colors less bright and saturated?

But hollow knight is just 2D dark souls

>I don't know what was the point of two dodge buttons
You can press R1 if you're holding R2 with your index finger, same with L1 and L2.

That's literally it. Instead of simplifying the system in other ways they decided to waste a button.

Well we still don't have DarkStalkers even after "DarkStalkers are not dead!"

Capcom has great IPs and horrible plans for said properties.

Attached: Darkstalkers-Not-Dead[1].jpg (1200x720, 150K)

But that won't make a problem if both bumpers were ment for defensive acts, how would that confuse the player?
I understand if they wanted to casualize the gameplay and all, but I don't see how making two buttons function exactly the same will help at all, and it doesn't make the controls more comfortable anyways because you still have to hold a trigger as long as you want to use said weapon
Were they really just this stupid?

What exactly is this image trying to prove? max payne is one of if not the best TPS of all time and youre pitting it against a fucking gamecube arcade shooter? Metal gear solid isnt exactly trying to be a pure stealth game either, its a blend of styles and a unique experience while Thief is pure focused stealth/ immersive sim gameplay. Final Fantasy 7 (just like the whole series) has never been good, its popular because its casual, easy and was flashy in many ways for a console game or a game in general of its time. It wouldnt be hard to make a similar type of image comparing games like resident evil remake, bloodborne (or fuck demons souls or dark souls), DMC3 or 5/ ninja gaiden etc to pretty embarrassing comparison points from the west

They absolutely were. Did you know the special attacks like high-time actually have two inputs? One of them is the default B/Circle, the other is melee+gun; that secondary input is not discussed anywhere that I know, and is carried over to the DLC content. What I think is that either it was going to be original input (like the special gun attacks) and dodge was going to be on B/Circle, but they found it felt like dogshit; or that Itsuno put it so people could put dodge on the usual button. This, by the way, is the reason why there's no forward-forward attacks for special attacks, or any attacks inputted by melee+special even those are in DMC4. No reason why the game doesn't have back-forwards inputs as in Platinum games that I know though.

The developping of the game was a mess, there's no doubt about it. There's even an interview in which Itsuno tells he even had to teach NT some basics of animation because theirs were so bad. And of course there's the infamous shoulder-blade enemies.

By the way, I discovered that input when I tried to use summoned swords while attack with Vergin, which (obviously) you can't do in DmC!

Interesting, I'm trying this input out when I get back home.
So presumably, we would assume that high-time was a two button input instead of a dedicated one, and that circle might've been the dodge button. Than the hell were the bumpers? DT and lock-on?

Attached: D_8KbgqU4AAK0UC.jpg (1163x1080, 80K)

Maybe weapon switching. I get the feeling the game was developped from the ground up to not have lock-on. I wouldn't be surpriser if the whole d-pad was going to be underused and there weren't going to be any guns besides E&I, since the other two guns are a complete afterthought in the game.

I'm going through the series in order, going from 1 to 2 I really like the character and environment designs a lot more, but everything else is unmemorable, especially the gameplay.

Attached: 1564886266713 (1).png (720x1040, 178K)

Is this image implying Max Payne isn't cinematic

I believe that the triggers always served for "weapon switching" just like the final game did. Maybe the bumpers were devil trigger and an angel trigger that was scrapped out. But how they would work in gameplay doesn't seem to make much sense.

Attached: h3qu69u601z11.jpg (897x508, 53K)

I hope not. I actually struggled to play Max Payne partially because I got annoyed with how slow it felt with slowmo on top of the last guy in a room dying with a cinematic playing every time.

>literally every single boss is a goddamn terrible piece of Leviathan-tier shit
shit game
