This is a game genre that hasn't progressed since 1999 because the only way to progress is to make it not that genre.
This is a genre where the dudes who have been playing since 1999 will and always will win every round, so no one is going to pick it up and play it for an hour after work.
So the userbase is always going to be a small niche of dudes who think they're too good for every other FPS, and maybe a couple of people who got it on Free Weekend and still like it.

After I checked out quake champions I realized that I just didn‘t find enough variety in this genre. There‘s only ever 7 or so weapons and I honestly just get bored of that.
Also Death Match is mostly just shoot-in-the-back simulator and if there‘s any real skill in this genre it‘s only in duels.

A lot of people here think that, when it suits their arguments. And I really doubt marketing is what Q3A is lacking at this point.

People can't handle losing consistently to players who are better than them. If you get put into a lobby with someone who's been playing arena shooters all their life, you'll get your ass handed to you every time you run into them. They require time and dedication for a player to actually compete, which casual gamers don't want.

Card games allow anyone to hop on for 5 minutes a day and have a reasonable chance of beating even the best players in the world. You don't need to be good at the game, you don't need good reflexes, you just need to buy cards.

People want customizable weapons and perks, they want to kill people almost instantly, they want killstreak rewards, and they want lower skill ceilings.

My definition of arena shooter is actually far more open that the more common one. The only things needed for me to consider a game an arena shooter are relatively compact maps with a heavy focus on item control.
CoD doesn't have the latter.

I feel like if an arena shooter is to have a true chance at being popular it would somehow have to attract a large audience of new people from the get go, so that they can play games which aren't constantly dominated by the tryhards playing this sort of game for 2 decades. If the population is low this sort of game seems fated to die, most of the playerbase will already be far too good for somebody who is actually new and very few new players will put in the considerable time required to become even average at the game, all the while getting ruined every time they play.

It's not specific to arena shooters though, it would be the same like trying to get into Starcraft when others have been playing it for over 20 years, or any other game with a high skill cap from back in the day.

Okay, then to answer the question within the context of your specific definition, they are dead, the market evolved into whatever genre you would call Call of Duty.

This would all be solved if it could at least show who's active in what particular regions so you don't waste your time queuing up if people aren't playing. This might not seem like a big deal for maybe US or Europe but fuck it's a huge deal in Oceanic regions.

I don't think they would work well though, it will cause a lot of purists to scream and shit on the game endlessly. Hell, I've seen a lot of posts recently dedicated to shitting on CS of all games, on the basis that it's casualized Quake, and that game doesn't have weapon customization, perks, or killstreak rewards.

quake live tutorial/crash's course deathmatch part map (which is an actual map, just featured there and i forget the name of it) is smaller and has a more interesting layout than "a bunch of crates lying around a flat storage space: the map" that is shipment. but it's not about the size, it's more about what the map does with the verticality. most maps in quake are multilevel, so there can be stuff happening on the ground but also some other stuff on the bridge and balcony above, and then some more stuff down below in the underground section, and this continues throughout 90% of the map. at the same time, most CoD maps are urban areas with level streets and where only places of actual elevation difference are buildings, which are cramped.
CoD may be a good shooter game, but it's not an Arena shooter game.

you're drastically underestimating their aim skills because you're used to huge q3 hitboxes. cut those in half and that's how hard it is to hit LG or rail in QC. the hitboxes are near pixel perfect. the current QC competitors would aim you to shreds and tactics wouldn't help because a fully stacked player dies in three rails.

I genuinely can't give you an estimate for OW on PC. it might be as high as a hundred thousand or as low as a few thousand, we have no numbers. but we KNOW it's below CSGO.

As someone who plays QC and QL it's generally much easier to aim in QC. I've literally hit 60% LG in Unholy Trinity pubs. It's impossible to hit that much in QL.

QC was the last big hope for Quakefags and got to over a thousand average BEFORE going F2P iirc. that's a good reference point because Diabotical will cost money on entry.

against bad players some pros hit 65% in QL so that's not true. in casual modes like unholy trinity you'll meet a lot of noobs who can't dodge.
competitively the absolute monsters like tox and serious hit 50% LG against other top players. other pros hit about what you would expect, for example in the recent k1llsen - cooller grand final at Qcon k1llsen hit 43% and cooller 30. cooller has hit better in previous versions of QC so that's a bit of an anomaly, I admit.

what's changed is that on one hand the LG isn't a laggy noodle anymore, it hits exactly where you point it. and on the other hand hit detection in QC massively favors high pinged shooters over any target of theirs (as laggy targets are smoothed out while your aim remains crisp). so look into which servers you've activated in QC.

Arena shooters have the same problem as RTS and fighting games, in that today's uber-casual gamers just aren't interested in genres that require a decent amount of technical skill.
Fighting games however, have managed to stay somewhat relevant by combined supermajors like EVO and the publishing companies pumping huge amounts of money into them. Instead of having separate major tournaments for each game, the arena shooter community should have formed their own EVO over a decade ago, and encouaged multiple games and multiple publishers to join in.

I don't enjoy being pessimistic about this, I love quake (VQ3, fuck air control) and think 2GD is one of the if not THE most positive forces in the community / scene. if it were up to me I'd make Diabotical an overnight hit shitting all over QC and showing id how they failed not just us but themselves and their wallets with all their terrible decisions. but at the end of the day I don't see where the money is supposed to keep coming from after 6+ years of development and zero revenue except one small kickstarter collection and an ominous investor or two.

they did promise a classic mode with no differences between characters at some point but my guess is they scrapped it because of the different hit boxes. I can only imagine the spaghetti code behind this 20 GB for three maps monstrosity. who knows if it would be trivial to allow the different models to all run the same hitboxes and movement types or how deep the mess goes. the devs have been beyond desperate for a long, long time now so I like to think that if they could, they would have.

It's completely dead. People used to get better and just use skill to beat others. Today it's all about dumbing things down and forcing handicaps for shit players. When people used to do nothing but whine and complain other players could spit roast them and trash them until they left. Today the whiners are the most powerful force in the game because the developers cater to them and shut down anything that might offend them. Games used to be server based and you could keep the kind of audience you wanted in the server. Now most everything is ranked and matched so that you are forced to play with people who detract from the experience or complain about your play style and try to punish you for it. People claim they want "competitive" games but then go out and spend as much money on hardware advantages as they can when those advantages didn't really exist when everyone had a CRT and similar hardware. There's no bringing it back.

if there were a huge open world game with challenging AFPS type combat I'd agree with you but it doesn't exist and likely never will. huge world implies easy combat or you'd need a dark souls type save system which implies linearity again. there has never been an open world game with challenging combat and that's not a fluke. it's because challenge means failure is likely and that leads to back-tracking and the bottom 70% of players quitting after less than an hour played. big open world games depend on easy content so the average player can bumble through the whole thing and look at all the CONTENT the devs sunk a vast budget into.

That those attempts failed doesn't indicate that the arena shooter genre is dead. It merely indicates that it's one of the most mishandled genre. You can't just make an arena shooter and hope old players play it, you have to get some new blood too (which doesn't mean debasing yourself like QC did, I believe that there's a non-negligible portion of younger players who would like arena shooters but have never heard of the genre)

That said, there's a fair amount of poseurs and I don't think arena shooters will ever be a mainstream genre again.

That's because the game is a very complicated pyramid scheme. Every few years the game changes its engine and promises the perfect Quake game to all the desperate Arena FPS players and bam! Easy money.

It's meant to be a starter weapon so it's supposed to suck but MG can be used to kill enemies on low HP. Rail/LG/Rockets are basically the 3 golden weapons.

I remember the demo being kinda fun, but the full release was lacking. IIRC the bots weren't great, the artstyle (especially the characters and the color palette) wasn't very good, the movement felt slow (especially after 2k4 but admittedly 2k4's dodge was maybe a bit too much) and the weapons were lame.

Some of the vehicles were pretty good though.

However that's my vague recollection, I haven't touched the game for 10 years or something.

HiRezs signature move is to destroy their own games in some fit of Tzeentchian madness in order to 'focus' on their newer games.

probably joking but just in case, diabotical has only had one or two funding campaigns shortly after another and for a long time now there has been no way to support the devs at all, unless you have "investor" type money to throw around. there's currently no way to buy in and I'm not sure if there ever was a way after the initial kickstarter 6 years ago.
