JRPGs have been on a downward trend for years as they become streamlined versions of themselves rather than streamlined versions of complex WRPGs.

First JRPG: Dragon Quest
Second JRPG: Final Fantasy
Favorite JRPG: Final Fantasy IV
Only JRPG I ever played "for the story": Xenogears
Only other story-heavy, minigame-centric JRPG I've been able to tolerate: Final Fantasy VII.

-Simple battle system
-Readable menus
-Slick UI
-No time wasted, beatable in 20-30 hours.
-You only have to press A and heal to win.

Because you can get through them by just pressing A and you played them when you were a kid. If you think Golden Sun has "quaint charming characters" and "an engrossing story" that kind of just proves my point. Show me one JRPG where you can get through with only basic attacks and healing when you get low, it should be easy.

Side A is pretty much all JRPGs starting with the PS1 and onward. Save for a few exceptions. There are always exceptions.

Sometimes you have to employ a bit of strategy. But it's often very shallow, and during very select fights.
