To be honest, the amount of sci-fi tropes it tried to handle was a bit too much. Especially the time travel thing. But yeah, it was a very ahead of its times, since most visual novels were slice of life and this game was the first with the concept of "bunch of people trapped and solving mysteries"

Uchikoshi reuses a lot of ideas from E17, so I wasn't surpised by much that happens in the ZE games, especially VLR. Still great games, but E17 is in a league of its own

Its sad games need to insert a lot of mini games mechanic or fanservice in order for people to play them. This game only did the classic visual novel mechanic of choosing dialogs and actions while also making a very creative use of "faceless protagonist" trope

The time travel is an essential part of the twist. I liked how they made it work by justifying every characters reappearance in a different way.

it gets really REALLY boring in some parts but it's cool, it's a 6/10 for me to be desu

It's a very polarizing experience.
Those that the twist blindsided tend to think it's the greatest thing ever and either forgive or ignore its numerous flaws.
Its detractors note that the vast majority of the game has terrible pacing, unresolved threads, and that uchi literally cannot write a different story to save his life.

Personally, I think that it banked heavily on its twist reveal, that while powerful in the moment, doesn't really hold up the more you examine it later on. Of the Infinity Series, Remember11 simply pulled the concept off better, and being paced significantly better made the story less reliant on something that could have fallen flat. Shame its the polar opposite in that the end portion was executed in the most obtuse manner, partially intentionally, partially because Uchi and Naka both admit they fucked up.

I think people stick for E17 mostly for plot twist and soundtrack. Its true the writing isn't very good. Too many tropes and side female characters like Sora or You are underdeveloped. I played 428 Shibuya and I liked that too. I have yet to get every bad ending but I thought I'd like to play more games with real photography. It's one of those stories where rereading after you know the plot is pretty important because the change of perspective from 1st to 2nd playthrough helps elaborate the theme of the game.

I don't actually, but I can usually stand tropes, it's just that in this case it was complete bullshit because of how boring and uninspired it was. I mean western media has the same kind of tropes of presenting eastern philosophy at its most basic surface level and then expecting the audience to marvel, but the way it was presented in root double just really irked me for how fucking boring it was, or at least for how little it mattered in the end. It felt like it was just a time filler, basically, a giant waste of time.

I can't agree with you there. A crafted story and natural day to day life are not directly comparable in that way. For example, criticizing the quality of writing in a book can be completely legitimate, but complaining that real life events that happened don't make sense isn't going to hold much water.
If a story framed in such a way that causes the reader to expect that everything ties together, only later to find that the vast majority of the text is just unrelated, that is not world building, that is padding. You are not spending that time constructing a more immersive world, you are spending it reciting trivia.
The point that brings this back home is that a very minute subsection of those textdumps are actually and directly relevant to the plot, and I feel I/O would have been better off focusing on its core themes rather than going into long tirades about the 100th monkey theory and the moon.
Maybe I'm just tired from hearing about "Schrodinger's Cat" for the ten thousdandth time though.

C;H and C;C felt wildly different to me (I did play Head almost a decade ago, so I might have forgotten some things).
C;H focuses much more on paranoia and horror, delusion triggers were integral to the story. C;C is more about mystery and investigation. The themes of VNs don't have much overlap.
The structure itself is pretty standard. Flawed MC gets into shit, then through many hardships and losses he becomes a (slightly, in Takumi's case) better person.
