Basch, Ashe, or Balthier would have all been better main characters. In fact I would bet almost everything I own that one of them was at some point and then Vaan came along later in the dev cycle. It makes the game feel disjointed as all fuck. I still liked it tho.

To be fair, the re-releases have improved it a lot. Comparing the original to the latest Switch/XB1 TZA versions is a big list.
Other than that, it wasn't really a Final Fantasy game, more like a proto-Xenoblade despite being different devs.

The plot is a mess, it's basically Star Wars where Luke is useless and instead of Force it has complicated gibberish wrapped in bullshit inside shit. Gameplay is insanely grindy to the point where it feels like offline MMO. No Nobuo Uematsu. But graphics are still amazing.

Basch is just as bad as Vaan. He's boring as fucking hell. Honestly the only character in the main party with a drop of charisma is Balthier, and he barely seems interested in anything until his Dad is mentioned.

Final Fantasy XII is just as flashy, XIII just changed how ATB bar works and let you make combos which in theory should be XII's gameplay but deeper and more complicated, which they quite literally lobotomized by removing control over other party members and instead introducing retarded paradigm shift. FF XIII with FF XII's gambits would've been a great XIII.

FF7 takes 3 seconds to give you control of your character. There is no reason I should have to sit through 11 minutes of exposition dump. Its bad story telling.

The story is shit especially for a FF game. The gameplay is shit combat is mostly auto attacks with no interesting drops. Oh it doesn't feel like a FF game at all but rather a predecessor to xenoblade chronicles.

Ashe is the main character. You only play the first act of the game from Vaan's perspective, he turns into a side character after that.

I thought the story was much more interesting than every single FF story up to that point. Though it has its flaws, the fact that I was more interested in seeing how it unfolded already puts it above the rest. Same with the characters, they were better than anything else up to that point.

Not just that, but you don't even SEE your main character until that point. FF12 psychs you out like 3 times before finally introducing your main character, who initially has zero connection whatsoever to anything you just saw.
No, fans of ff12 just have very low standards for storytelling and don't mind a lazily edited narrative that takes their time and attention for granted. They're in the "consume product and get excited for next product" mindset.
And it's hilarious you mention 90 minute movies given that even 3 hour movies don't waste as much time as FF12 does in its intro. Frankly even TV series usually waste less time introducing the protagonist.
Tactics has a long-ish intro, but unlike FF12 there's a very clear and obvious story-based reason why the intro is the way it is.
And more importantly, no time at all is wasted introducing Ramza, the main character. (it's about 2 minutes).
Also, Tactics is a different sort of game and is paced differently from a JRPG due based around long and involved tactical battles

They completely changed the game from its original idea (more emphasis on airships, etc.), shoehorned shota, is an Ivalice story so it doesn't fit w/ typical FF, and the gameplay itself was not what anyone was expecting (or ever asked for).
TZA made a lot of improvements, but it's still a really rough game when you look past the polish.

It's the lack of powergrinding that kills replay value, because once you reach the Keep of Forgotten Time it's just wasting time to be able to level up enough to complete the rest out the missions so you stand a chance against the upgraded Feolthanos fight.
