That's not how it works. They get paid whatever bonus+ funding for sales equalling whatever it was, I think 10,000 units was the number people threw around. I went outside to buy fallout 4 a while ago (I was bored okay) because my internet is shit and I wanted to play it soon. I ended up with 4GB and a prompt to download the other 20 through steam. Physical PC games are fucking dead. I didn't even realise I forgot to swap my CD drive over when I replaced my PSU for fucking months. Also indie or foreign shit isn't getting physical releases ever. Only big title do. Maybe a new website that sends out physical releases of games for devs that put them up there?

I must say, I'm actually impressed. Tim Sweeney said that "the customers don't matter, only companies do" and used his China money, Fortnite money and Unreal cuts to fund a literal mini-industry that constantly loses Epic Games money purely to spite Steam.

He literally created an industry with little to no customers where he throws away money at a loss where indie devs run on bribes rather than sales.

Devs should absolutely cash in on free money while they can, but I'm also not buying from Epic. That way everyone wins except Epic in the long-term.
