Hollow Knight is the dark souls of the darksoulslikes. It's like DOOM of FPS games - it saved the genre after Halo almost killed it.

The lady tells you to go back to your place of birth or whatever and since when you die your soul looks like the void enemies its not hard to figure out where to go

I didn't like the combat. I didn't find it satisfying, and you get knocked back from an enemy by your own attacks unless you spend an equip slot to nullify it. Overall never really felt fulfilling to get anywhere new in the same way Souls games do. You might like it if you can look past that and stick with it until you get more movement options. I put around 20 hours in and put it off to play other stuff, never cared enough to go back to it. I think it's decent enough, but over-rated on Yea Forums

I'm not the OP but I will say that the souls thing it does somewhat seem comparable in is tone. It has the same sort of atmosphere to much of the levels and npc interactions. Of all the things to be similar to, probably the best.

Hollow Knight is DEFINITELY like Dark Souls. I believe Team Cherry when they say that they had these ideas before Dark Souls and they didn't play it or take inspiration from it, but the similarities are undeniable:

>dark high fantasy
>shell of a dilapidated kingdom that was once great
>no music or lowkey ambient music most of the time in to pounding, triumphant boss themes
>most of the story not told overtly, but through subtle details about the world and dialogue
>main character's defining feature is a powerful darkness inside of them
>goal of the game is to kill somebody who was once a great champion

Is it just me or is this game both exhausting/stressful as fuck?
Worrying about where the next bench is, replaying a boss for the umpteenth time wondering if this will finally be it, wandering around looking for badges, wondering if that next room is gonna lock you into a boss fight you arent prepped for, etc-

It's all punishing and I don't know if I can muster the energy to finish the game (just got to Hornet pt. 2 after about ~20 hours) would easily be 40 hours if i didnt start using a map about half way through

It's my first metroidvania so i don't know if my opinion is valid but i think it is a very good game and for the price it is an enjoyable experience.
Trashes comparing it to darksouls should hang themselves though. Not a single boss in this game is hard so if someone wants a cool game where casual playthrough can take 10-30 hours then it is a money well spent
