Was anyone disappointed (or surprised) when they discovered Hamada's anger and sadism aren't just part of a character he's playing?
That video of him getting so pissed off at Tanaka for flubbing lines that he hurls objects at him until he's left crying from a mixture of pain and humiliation is just hard to watch.
It really puts the "gags" into perspective when you know off-camera he probably bullies them by abusing his status as "older comedian" (whatever the fuck that means) knowing they wouldn't be able to say anything back without losing their jobs.

he enjoys that kind of stuff, but he's still pretty nice to them and has done a bunch of kind stuff for them. there's a gaki video where they celebrate his birthday and I forget who, but I think it was a member of cocorico said they would probably be nothing without him. he took them off the street, gave them food, and introduced them to a few gigs until they could get back on their feet, and wouldn't accept any payment for his trouble. he embraces the character on screen to get a raw reaction out of people, but it doesn't go beyond that.

I haven't watched this year's, but the comedy declined as production quality increased, personally. CA was the last truly great one; now its mostly the same 20 minute segments with the same unfunny cameos. The best stuff is them just bullshitting and doing drawers.

I am disappointed you didn't make a proper research before saying all that.
It IS his character. If anything, Matsumoto is more of a diva than Hamada is. Everyone who knows him says he is extremely kind off camera. Short tempered maybe? Sure. But he's a kind guy overall.
Go watch the episodes on Hamada's 50th birthday.
Kudos to him though, for making everyone (including you) believe that he's really like that.
