For me, it's Whitemane.

This, it was a concern years before Heroes of the Storm was even called that. When it was Blizzard DOTA and then Blizzard Allstars, people even then (myself included) thought they were late to the party, and that people would not abandon their established hoard of paid LoL skins and whatnot just to try a new moba simply because Blizzard made it and it has famous game characters.

It's a shame, since Heroes addressed every issue I had with other mobas:

blizzard is in such a shithole state they couldn't sustain the powerhouse of WoW or WC3 using top artists in the industry so they stole the hots developers who were just working on their passion project to fix their trainwrecks WoW, WoW Classic, WC3 remaster and diablo 4 before their stocks plummet to 0

Heroes had its best year ever while Blizzard in turn made record profits, and they then chose to cut Heroes' funding and mutilate its dev team simply because it wasn't doing as well as Activision would like, even if it was doing well enough and had a modest but dedicated community. I imagine part of the reason was that they were tired of funding HGC's weirdly good cash prizes, so they killed the entire project since it wasn't good enough as a money maker to justify in their eyes, throwing the baby out with the bathwater that was Blizzard trying to make Heroes into a respected esport, complete with how they had it on ESPN.

This is what truly made the least sense to me with HotS in particular. They didn't even want to call that game a moba for years, choosing to refer to it as a "hero brawler." They should have leaned into the casual bing bing wahoo style over substance crowd by pointing out how easy Heroes is to get into compared to other games in the genre and tried to sell it to Smash Bros. types of fans. Sell it as a big fun crossover brawl party game.

The way Blizzard managed Heroes would be like if Sakurai started hosting his own Smash tournaments with massive prize pools. You can't tell people to stop taking it seriously as a fighting game and just enjoy it as a casual party game if you're also encouraging bleeding edge competition for money. It's just plain incompatible. Hypocritical mixed messaging doesn't even begin to describe the situation. And Blizzard did exactly this sort of thing by casualizing the shit out of mobas even more than they already are while trying to make some interesting competitive scene out of their simplified party brawler.

HotS wasn't designed initially as some kind of hyper competitive e-sports game, at least that's my perception from playing it over the years, but they tried their best to shove a square peg in a circle hole at the cost of the people who liked it for being a more relaxed and casual game with characters they knew.

This is something else that was great about Heroes that doesn't come up enough. When I played LoL a match would last minimum 20 minutes (if the enemy team surrenders ASAP), and an average match time was something like 35-45 minutes, sometimes reaching past 55 minutes if things really dragged on. I played in like Season 1 and Season 2, mind you. Heroes, on the other hand, often has games go on for just fifteen minutes or so, with some of the longest matches merely being thirty or so minutes. That's much easier to just dive into on a whim/ while on a break than LoL, so I found myself opening Heroes more and more often than LoL until it replaced that game for me entirely. LoL matches are an obnoxiously long commitment, and while I've never played DotA or DOTA 2, I can't imagine matches are particularly short.

This Mega Bundles were great. They should've brought it back yearly or something, to get new blood into the mix. Four different giant packs of characters and you can pick one of your choice at no cost simply as a thank you for trying the game, and to help get the player into it. It was a really smart move and a lot of people checked Heroes out for the first time while it was running.

Every single thing about HotS' design just screams "we're the moba option for people that just want a fun casual video game to play with their friends, instead of serious hardcore competition." But, once they made that casual game they then thrust it as hard as they could right into that ill-fitting hardcore competitive environment. It's absolutely insane.

I loved Hots... sad that Blizz took stupid decisions once more.

My theory is they just couldn't resist the kinds of money and attention games like Dota and League were getting, even if the initial design goals were to attract an audience far different to those two titles. You can see the shift as time went on with stuff like character balancing, where they put heavy emphasis on making stuff better for esport play and not casual play.

They probably noticed too late that the bizarre focus shift was actually doing more harm for the title than good because they'd already thrown all chips on the professional play horse, just like with Overmeme.

Tell that to Dead or Alive's entire franchise for the last two decades or so.

I still play it, the game is still fun for me but there are problems.
Some OW heroes have such a stupid toolkit for a MOBA and it took forever for Blizzard to fix them.
Matchmaking is a HUGE problem if you're playing ranked, i've seen people in Plat that have no idea how to play the game, and people that do know stuck on silver/gold. I've lost most of my ranked games thanks to people that don't pick to win and pick their favorite champ no matter how the enemy team counters them and even if their champ has absolutely no sinergy with the rest of the team.
Overall is a fun game, just don't take it too seriously.

Ranked matchmaking has always been a fucking retarded

These are all problems I've noticed for a long time as well. You can play outside of ranked like I do (because I can't be bothered playing snakes and ladders against a rigged system) and find diamond players who can't play for shit, and silver players who wipe the absolute floor with them.

The rank placement system, and matchmaking in general is just completely fucked, it stacks matches more and more heavily against you to try and keep you riding that 50% win rate line no matter what if you're not in a five man gang bang stack.

I'd say it was around the time when they added Genji and started really fine-tuning Lucio that things truly felt different. Those aren't leaving LoL or DOTA 2; they just plain aren't. They picked their game, planted their flag, invested a ton of cash on skins over years, and you're not going to get them to turn their back on that hoard of virtual goodies now when you aren't offering free goodies to converts. I feel like I could argue it was even before Overwatch and the speed meta began to take a deep root in the game. Li-Ming was a prime example of an absolute dumpster fire to play against in casual play because of how much damage she could fart out, and casual players had no idea whatsoever on how to counter her or pick her off properly. However, the pros were fine with her because lmao ez. This left casual play in an almost unplayable state until Blizzard FINALLY decided to wittle her down a bit with much casual player backlash. Sylvanas and Nova were also two absolute nightmares in their heyday.

Greymane is a good point, but it could be argued that early HGC Valla and Illidan were also to blame. They started getting tuned quite tightly due to pro play, and that dominoed into other heroes being balanced that way. Either way though, yes, by the time Greymane started swinging back and forth on the balance scale was the true sign that design philosophy had changed. He had to be balanced on a knife's edge since he was the best ranged assassin/ ADC in a lot of scenarios, but when he was nerfed by just a tad he fell off of casual play entirely. That could have been said of Valla in earlier times, but eh, that's neither here nor there. Greymane is a good landmark for this in general.

Alexstraza is the best answer. She has an army of local dragons, and she's basically an immortal life elemental who can look however her lover wants and can likely bestow them with infinite raw vitality for their own immortality (or at least a lot of sexual stamina when mating with her.) She chooses to adorn herself with gold and jewels so she's likely just as loaded as one would expect from a Smaug-esque dragon queen, but she doesn't come with the aggressive downsides of Tyrande and Sylvanas. She's a very gentle, kind, motherly person on top of being monstrously strong (refer to the Wrathgate cinematic), and given that she's birthed literally thousands of children, we know she breeds well. Plus, dragons are inherently magical, so she's probably still real tight despite her dragon egg Slip 'n' Slide of a pussy.

It just later turned out that orcs who aren't Thrall, who were in full control of their own actions, were more than happy to reward Jaina's kind aid by attempting to kill both her and pretty much everyone she knows and loves all in the blink of an eye. Boy did she learn her fucking that day, and now we have modern Jaina to thank Garrosh for, because she wasn't even half as hot or interesting when she was a kind, simple, bookish tomboy mage. Sometimes you have to let something even as grave as treachory slide if seeking recompense would do nothing but cause you more frustrations, such as Kathrine pulling the entire Kul'tiran naval force out of the Alliance, if not outright forming them into a new enemy where the Stormwind-led Alliance is now fighting both the Horde and the Kul'tirans. It just wouldn't be worth the risk, so I get it if that was the characters' rationale.

She's boring looking and makes me think of The Falcon. Still, I will say that one or two of her abilities seem fun to use, like the one where she spins around an enemy for a bit. Overall though it feels like an incredibly non-creative character. It's just some bitch with a chain sword like Zabimaru from Bleach, and she does nothing particularly interesting with it aside from that one spinning move.

Mengsk would fit the new Support role (not a healer, a buff-type sport), empowering allies through leadership and command-themed abilities, like an attack damage buff that he shouts at an ally. That sort of thing. Give him a basic pistol with shit damage and make him a ranged support who likes to stand back and let his allies do most of the hurting for him, since he's never once been depicted as an actual fighter, just a leader of troops. Still, anyone can shoot a gun, and a charismatic, authoritative leader's words carry weight. Make him feel kind of like Lucio with buff management, maybe give him some sort of tactical snare/ stun he can put on the ground to trap divers who try to assassinate him (because the real Mengsk character is absolutely the type who rigs up hidden mounted machine guns in his office and shit like that.)

Horadric Cube was an item in Diablo 2, Deckard is the last of the Horadrim so it makes sense to give the cube to him. Healing potions are all over Diablo, you just needed a support hero to use them as part of his kit. Scroll of Sealing is the only thing not taken from the game but even scrolls are all over Diablo.

Sylvanas has always made pre-emptive strkes against anyone she distrusts, whether they're allies, enemies, or complete strangers. Why in the shit would an evil dictator not make sure her predecessor is dead? There's zero sense in leaving him alive since the populace could rally around the idea of putting him back in power if they decide they dislike the new leadership. It's a shame that they didn't even give us what we wanted from those boxes in terms of minor additions. I've seen so many posts begging for new banners, and more minor skins, like the one where Artanis uses one of his own blades and one of Zeratul's green ones, complete with some bloodspatter on his armor to match up with how that played out in SC2. If that's allowed, why can't we add back in Death Knight Arthas, since that skin was removed in beta due to whiners complaining about it costing $10 as "just a helm removal and a voice pack swap to Crown Prince."

There are plenty of little minor differences people would've liked to have accommodated. Running with the Arthas thing (because he's popular and I've seen a lot of skin discussion for him), some people want the hooded version from when he first returns to Lorderon to kill daddy Terenas. Some want that skin to change his Remorseless Winter AoE aura to rose petals to fit it, too.

I remember seeing a neat idea that Mengsk would replace the core with a base, and basically operate globally from there, and have ways of manipulating and buffing lane creeps on your side.

He's right. No items is such a stupid decision gameplaywise. Not only you can't counter, but it removes like 90% of the gameplay (controlling the shops, the courier, getting farm, getting kills to get the items, lot of different builds, going all-in for that one item, etc.)

MOBAs were popular for their competetive nature, it was their main selling point. HotS was the most casual facerollfest that had hit the market. This was also right after Diablo 3 made a huge portion of the longrunning Blizzdrones finally wake up and decide Blizzard didnt care about them anymore. It was really easy to simply not try HotS because at a glance players could tell it was more about brand recognition than engaging gameplay.
