The interesting part is WHY they'd gimp their game if it's so easy to port the models.

My theory is that it's so they can sell mid-gen games.
Think about it, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire.
These remakes made a shitload of money.
The sales were partially motivated by nostalgia but also partially by the desire to get them all.

Before FRLG and HGSS it was difficult to get those generations of pokemon.
And even though you could trade Gen 3 pokemon up from the GBA to 3DS, ORAS gave you almost all the legendaries that were previously from events.

I think Gamefreak/Nintendo realize if everyone can just bring forward their pokemon there will be less motivation to buy a stepping-stone game between now and the next generation.
