4 was a great game but Capcom learned all the wrong lessons from it and they made the RE franchise dog shit for 10+ years because of it.

MGS also hardly qualifies as a game.

MGS3:S has the best gameplay of the whole series. MGS1 is a better experience overall, but that's 5th gen.

And it's still laughably shallow compared to other 6th gen stealth titles, such as Blood Money, Chaos Theory, or The Metal Age. Metal Gear has always been more interested in being cinematic and emulating film than having compelling gameplay systems. The fact that it took the franchise 30 years to have a game that had mechanics as stealth games in the 90s is pretty telling.

What are the chances that a game that went through almost 4 different revisions (one of them going on to become DMC) with a troubled development cycle, that also changed it's gameplay style so drastically, would actually turn out to be one of the greatest video games ever made? RE4 is so incredible in almost every single department. The game continues to stand the test of time and if anything only gets better with age because it's the crowning achievement of what the medium can truly be
