Tangible progression. There are constant upgrades to your mobility and destructive capabilities. Once you find your first Cloud in a Bottle or Hermes' Boots you're well on your way from being a bitch who can barely run and jump to being a flying Spider-man crossed with the Flash.

Talk to guide, build some houses, talk to NPCs that move in

those glowing altars underground can be used to create items to summon bosses, the first boss is a giant eyeball and you need to use several lenses dropped by the smaller eyeballs to summon him

It's a sandbox, do what you want.

Pick an interesting region and explore. Search for loot, look for new monsters, events, etc. Build a home, make it fancy or functional, what ever you prefer.

The game has plenty to do, it just doesn't grab you by the hand and drag you down any intended path.

There are mods like boss checklist wich inform you on your next objective.

Beat a bunch of bosses to get cool toys and then beat the wall of flesh so that you get even cooler toys and then beat some more bosses and then beat the final boss to win the game

There's more dumb shit like some crafting trees and how much you gotta get for those, look at the omniblade ingredients and what they require and so on, and the boss that drops ingredients directly has to be farmed to make one Omniblade

I remember when expert mode first came out, it was mostly smooth sailing until i encountered plantera and struggled for a few days. The worst part was constantly having to go get tons of potions for every single bossfight.

It helps to play with friends. I've never played a minute of this game alone
