Wait for a sale but yes it is considerably different than the free 2012 mod.

They've also been releasing Xen betas recently so the full project is definitely almost done.

Buy it, if there's any team in today's gaming industry that actually deserves your money it's Crowbar Collective.

It's not even 30 bucks

they took years to release the last chapters, wich are not even out yet. Don't buy.

If you haven't played it before just get the mod version. The only thing you'll be missing is xen which still isn't out yet. I only ended up buying it during one of the sales because it's more stable than the mod and doesn't crash at the drop of a hat.
Honestly xen is going way off the rails in a bad way. It's pretty and all but the gameplay is a mess.

>It's pretty and all but the gameplay is a mess.

What's wrong with it? I hear the gonarch fight is way too overtuned but that's about it

The Gonarch fight is the only thing I had a few hiccups with, rest of the levels so far are very enjoyable.

gonarch is soooooooooo long it's not even fun, just tedious. rest of the game is great though

Gonarch is a bit mental and doesn't ever calm the fuck down along with being fast as hell and shitting out baby headcrabs constantly.
My biggest gripe with how they reworked its whole fight though how they dragged out to include several chase sequences that are really finicky. The idea is you boost around with long jump but source being what it is if you so much as brush something your momentum evaporates and gonarch who is right on your ass either sends you into the stratosphere or beats you to death against a wall. Then they start adding web walls you need to shoot though but they don't look all that different from webs you can't shoot through and then theres's this fire and goop/oil mechanic that's in every goddamn cave.
It's just like the dev team kept piling shit on and nobody ever said "fuckin STOP already"

I dont understand how valve made a worse looking game than a bunch of modders?? And they parade it around steam like they're proud of that

I'm going to presume they'll tone down some of that shit since everyone seems to be saying it's a bit wack

I don't hate it but it's objectively worse then the original in terms of game design. They fucked with enemy balancing and map layouts to "improve" the game but nearly every improvement is substantially worse to play then the original.

Xen isn't looking much better either.

>The only thing you'll be missing is xen
The mod version still has the cut Surface Tension, doesn't it?

Beta is out that what i've heard. But when is the full release date ? I might be wrong but i heard is something this month right ?

Yeah but Im 90% sure the one in the steam version is just the addon someone made for the mod in the first place.

Nah, steam version is made by the same guy who was hired after his mod. It's even better.

The 2012 mod is actually better

how about you share the reasoning behind your opinion

Well it's the contrary of what everybody else thinks so that's probably his reasoning

You're only interesting in you don't share the same opinion as everybody else, didn't you get the memo?

So who here /Hype/ for Operation: Black mesa and Guard Duty aswel? Gonna be ages before these come out but the summer update gave some juicy deets.

never ever but thats what I said about black mesa too so

>Truer to the Half Life experience (No unnecessary re-recordings, less fucking with Half Life mapping)
>Isn't as much broken shit (Why can't they fix always run).
>better gunplay
>free
For the most part they're the same but I found myself enjoying the mod more despite the cut in chapters

They seem to be going to far in the opposite direction of the original xen

It's a shame that they couldn't build on top of Black Mesa. Like, I get that they wanted to do their own interpretation (after all, I have my own disagreements with some of Black Mesa's decisions), but it still would have been nice if all the mods had come out with a mutual consistency on par with OpFor and BlueS with Half-Life. It would have been a nice aesthetic illusion.

I actually like to see more of what race x.

I think it makes sense why they're doing their own thing
>No, we won't be using Black Mesa content in any shape or form, for the following reasons:
>We would potentially have to redesign some of our work.
>Projects of this scale are a great opportunity to build a portfolio, being the main reason for many of us to contribute in the first place.
>Using their content without approval would be theft.
>Coordinating asset sharing would be quite complicated, due to both projects being commercial.
There's always the power of skins too so you can port Black Mesa stuff to OBM or vice versa

My memory is fuzzy but I'm pretty sure they both started when black mesa was still vaporware and only combined after it got released. Now that BM is being sold commercially I'd guess that puts even more of a damper on building off of it.

Yes, you don't understand. black mesa is the game made by modders, dumb ass

Wait until Xen is released. It's going through the final phases right now. Should be another couple of months.

>It's going through the final phases right now. Should be another couple of months.
It feels like I've heard this exact quote for 5 years now.

The Steam version has a dead multiplayer mode and runs considerably smoother. Other than that it is mostly identical to the mod version.
Xen isn't out yet, hopefully by the end of the year.

I know I know, but the developers have made 5 news posts in the last 2 months. That's very significant for Black Mesa.

is Xen supposed to be its own game or is it just the same 2 hour end game as it was in the original game? i would think its like its own game seeing how it has taken 7 years to finish

I think it's slightly expanded, probably 1/4th the length of blue shift

there's been news posts that the Xen parts are around 20 hours long. I dunno if that's PR talk, but the developers have been working on Xen for like 80 years now.

It's the same game, same team, Valve just granted them permission to sell it on Steam.

I imagine the multiplayer didn't take very long to make but I have to ask why and who thought it was a good use of time
They say they want to make it its own chapter rather than just being the end of the game like it is in HL. I'm not crazy about how they're doing that but they certainly are making it longer.

It's expanded with it being a lot bigger and "better".

Unrelated to Black Mesa but Dark Interval got updated again to 1.2. You guys should check it out if you have interest in the HL2 Beta

>Dark Interval
What is it?

Yeah, just buy the damn game. It's still better than anything valve has failed at over the last years

Developers said it's a matter of weeks from this point.

So from a realistic viewpoint: yeah probably a month of three

One of the many HL2 beta recreation mods. This one is being released in parts but it's pretty developed so far.

>that feel when the They Hunger developer might be literally dead and we'll never get They Hunger Lost Souls
Half life mods are a blessing and a curse

>Half life mods are a blessing and a curse
Just like Half Life itself

what

dont play black mesa
its almost good but they made the marines have perfect accuracy
.1 sec walking out of cover from halfway across the map and you take 25 hitscan damage
incredibly frustrating

bruh

Wisdom brother. 1 and 2 changed things, some things for the far better, some things for way fucking worse

They changed that years ago.

But yeah, the Black Mesa devs cannot into game balance. They did something similar making the Gonarch fight way too frustrating annoying.

2012 mod is almost completely different, at this point. some broad strokes of level geometry in about half the game, and the core gameplay mechanics, are about all it has in common. large parts have been totally remade since.

it's definitely worth just buying, especially with Xen now releasing (and being as fantastic as the rest of it).

it's just people complaining about Gonarch being too hard. there's some legitimacy to it, on Hard it's got so much health that the actual arena fights are just tedious.
