The way I would describe it is that the story is mostly good although it does cheat and pull a few Fates tier things sometimes to get to those story beats. But those moments are very few and nothing is ever as egregious. Overall it's great.

Yea it's pretty bad. Gambits need way more restrictions or even need to be absent in lunatic if they actually provide a difficult mode.
It's even worse when you start combining gambits. Stride plus free hits from the affected units is just broken as hell.

The biggest issue is the timeskip - it comes out of nowhere and felt shoehorned in so key characters can get some development.

It's not no, the writing is tropey and honestly forced just to make the three houses fight in every route. Dimitri and Claude specifically fighting usually makes little sense as an example, but despite all that it's very enjoyable.

Start a turn with "stride", follow up with a assisted gambit, swoop in with a free follow up attack from an adjutant... Throw in 1tile counters from bow users, equipping multiple breaker skills, etc. and you end up with game balance equal to 0.

Close to finish BL route. Gonna go GD next but I want the thing to be more difficult. I'm going to unequip skills, combat arts and only use iron weapons. Gambits are fun for breaking monsters shields, so those stay with Byleth, Claude and perhaps my dancer.

Attack adjutants are a free follow up hit that doesnt use durability.
Defense adjutants take the damage for you, and healers heal you at the start of the turn, and you can have up to three of them, meaning the whole package if you want.

You don't need to go through every class level. Just look up some list on what the growths are for it, the skill it gives when mastered and whether it helps the character in the long run or not. Regardless, Pegasus Knight gives characters a good Speed growth as well as a skill that boosts your Speed when attacking, so it definitely is serviceable as an advanced class.

Your first route will take you longer and form your first impressions, so just pick your favorite lord first. And then there's two routes for Black Eagles, so I would make sure to space those out so you don't get fatigued with that house.

The easiest way to make sure would be to only A support two units you want to end up together, which sucks because you're missing out on all these A supports, might be worth getting the supports ready to A level before the final battle and saving.

And just to make sure, does this occur at the end of the game? Or is it just post-timeskip at some point?

Right before your last mission post-timeskip, so the final battle of the game, if you only had units A supported with who you wanted them to end up with then when you get the endings you'll see everything you want, then you could go back, load the save, do all of the A supports and the final battle once more just to unlock all the A supports in the game gallery. Just make sure to put your post-game save in a different slot. Just check if units have an A+ support so you don't get caught out on mission a support altogether.

You can not kill her if you pick certain dialogue choices leading up to the mission ("Can't we walk the same path as her?" or something to that effect), and if you don't, then Dedue chases her down and kills her later.
