This. The Super Nintendo had a big library of great 2D games, by the end of it's lifespan everyone was getting a glimpse of real 3D on the console market. And just like that, 2D was old hat. Nobody could have predicted how visually unimpressive early 3D would end up looking.

I want Marina to shake me

I want a sequel or a remake or an acknowledgement that she ever existed at least

The fucking N64 should have failed, period. Shit controller, shit games, shit everything. But Nintendo was right in the middle of their "style over substance pay off reviewers brainwash new gamers into loving us" renaissance that created modern gaming, along with Sony.
Mid-90s was the beginning of the end of gaming and the N64 was a HUGE part of that.

That's wrong

Probably because of this piece of shit. At least Rare did Killer Instinct right, but yoshis story probably discouraged Nintendo from doing 2D for a good while.

>The fucking N64 should have failed, period.
it did. it was a massive flop and nintendo still hasn't recovered all the market share they lost.

Because Nintendo thought it was a good idea to put their best 2D developer on the Virtual Boy

Most people don't look at it and think "MARINA IS CUTE I LOVE MARINA," they think "oh yeah that game was fun i guess"

Treasure games are forgotten

I AM WHIIITE

CERBERUS ALPHAAA

There weren't that many to begin with, and almost all the big developers wanted to focus on 3D. I can only think of Mischief Makers, which everybody likes but wasn't really advertised and Goemon's Great Adventure, a series that wasn't really popular in America, so I'm pretty sure everybody missed out on it. The other is Yoshi's Story which was like a top 20 best seller for the system.
Other than that I remember buying KIGold, and as far as I know it did well in terms of sales.
Well, it's what we're pretty much playing right now, so yes, they were right.

Because it would be absolutely silly to use the most powerful 3d console at the time to sell 2d games when the cost of cartridge memory was so expensive and ps1 was much better at it.

The more apt question would be "Why did the N64 fail?"

I think he likes the punishment, I don't blame him

Attached: 1534596875690.png (778x1078, 811K)

Because they looked like poop. Pre-rendered sprites were a mistake.

So developing Mischief Makers on N64 was a mistake? Honestly the game's control scheme doesn't lend itself well on other controllers, dashing around with a control stick just does not feel right at all

To be quite honest, the PlayStation was such a dominant console at the time. It could do 3D games, play audio CDs, utilize Demo Disks and had a huge library of 3rd party developers.

The real question is, how did Nintendo even survive.

Nintendo had cartridge memory that was a hell of a lot faster than "recommended" CD loading.
(There were games like Crash Bandicoot which could stream data back and forth from the CD, but this was an exception to the vast library of PS1 games)
In addition to this, the games also had much more accurate 3D processing.
(The Saturn had the most accurate 3D but Sega sabotaged it's own system on launch)
Nintendo also brought out the heavy hitters with new critically acclaimed Legend of Zelda and Super Mario titles. They weren't just good, they were genre-defying leaps in the way games are played to this day.
Finally, the N64 had a true analogue stick. The funky controller design was complicated to understand but also iconic. It was clear from any games that utilized it, that the analogue stick was a necessary component to 3D movement.

tl;dr - The PlayStation was a more useful home entertainment device and more games but Nintendo had a better gaming experience.

>t. A 30 year old boomer... *sips*

Attached: Fucked Up.jpg (1800x1950, 1.02M)

literally no one but casuals wanted a PS1 back then, everybody was balls deep into zelda or PC gaming. Unironically, nintendo had a better casual experience too, pushing mario party and sports with a big focus on multiplayer games.

It didn't beat the PS1 but it wasn't a flop by any stretch of the term

Attached: D6jB8jDWAAEZem6.jpg (1200x1160, 110K)

>this revisionist history

Adults and teens preferred the PS1 for Final Fantasy, MGS and Gran Turismo.

N64 was the kiddy console.

>literally no one but casuals wanted a PS1 back then
102.5 million sold :)
>everybody was balls deep into zelda or PC gaming.
you pc mustards are beyond delusional.

ps1: 102.5 million sold
n64: 33 million sold
the n64 was a massive flop. it even got outsold by the fucking saturn in japan.

>muh mature gaming such as myself
thanks for proving my point, casual. Is easy to say "people preffered Final Fantasy" now, but back then it was a game planned for both consoles. Also, there is a GT game for 64 you larper retard.

It's hard having a fetish for cropped hoodies but I take what I can get

>deal with the superior game experience kid
I already called you a casual my man.

Introducing analog sticks and rumble to the market and setting the groundwork for modern gaming isn't good enough it seems

This. Reviewers slammed literally anything that wasn't 3D. Console makers pushed for 3D in order to promote their systems and rarely let any 2D games through.

He's right and his numbers back it up. What do you do in response? Low quality shitpost with a stupid rei look-alike from a bad vn.

Can't wait for the same thing to happen with VR next gen.

It flopped so hard in Japan that they were still selling SNES games in 99.

Sony released a pretty good product with a considerable head-start, good enough to let the consumers know it was trustworthy.
It was also more publisher friendly than Nintendo at the time, combined with an smart marketing strategy it let everybody know of the varied library it had.
By the time the n64 was released, everybody who didn't have a PS1 was curious about it, and back then it was more common for a family to only afford one console.
It was a strange combination of effects, but understandable. What's strange to me is the success of the Wii + PS3 letdown and the return to the top of the PS4. One would have though consumers are less forgiving now.

It wasn't just the N64. The 3D craze had started and people were vehemently expecting that envelope to be pushed. Then you had the Fortnite kids of the time that were cutting their teeth on the N64 and PS, who were fanatical in their dislike of 2D because it wasn't "cool".

80s faces + today's bodies is the patrician way to go

No thank you. Wayforward's style is too cheesy-cutesy, and their games lack depth.

Contra 4
Double Dragon Neo
and that promising River City Girls says otherwise

Both of these look great, except marina's eyes. Honestly, it's sad to be so close to perfection, and yet so far away.

River City Girls is one of the reasons that made me fear their involvement. The last thing I want is anything resembling that game. All girl power tripe.

I guess the other 2 games are alright. Though I never played Contra 4, and only had a brief experience with Double Dragon Neon. Which appeared to just retread old tropes, except more cheesy than before. Like a parody of Double Dragon.

Yeah, WayForward being the Platinum Games of 2D platformers is getting on my nerves. Anytime someone suggests them to do a 2D platformer I roll my eyes.

Okay smartasses got any better candidates?

Theo knows what he likes she has a near-infinite supply of fuel for her rocket legs it has to go somewhere

Attached: 1561102927240.png (500x500, 163K)

How about the same company the developed the original? Shocking, right?

Or...leave it alone.

I kind of get the suggestion if we look at things broadly. It's 2D, the lead character is female, and Marina is cute. But I just disagree with the particulars. The game has more depth than it initially seems. If you ever tried to get S ranks, or seen someone perform at S-rank level, then you'd know they made the mechanics to be pushed beyond normal play.

And Marina's cuteness isn't so overt as other of Wayforward's characters. She doesn't look sexualized, for starters. Despite how the Prof treats her, he didn't make her for lewd. She's supposedly a maid, but acts completely like a battle bot, doing every task with strength and vigor. Easily excitable and overzealous in her duty, she often responds recklessly, putting everyone in danger, despite her intent.

But here's what Wayforard would think: "Marina has an idle animation where she hums to herself, so she must be SUPER girly. We have to keep reminding the player she's a girl. Make her cuter. CUTER. No, this doesn't ruin her character. She has short hair, see? Short hair means she's a tomboy."

Well Treasure hasn't developed anything in 5 years and some of us would like to see Marina make a return someday, but sure, your smarmy elitism definitely helps

Attached: 1540250182490.png (1000x783, 197K)

Treasure doesn't make sequels, S&P2 is the sole exception.

I'm fine with replaying the originals vs. making a half-assed remake that missed the point as the user eloquently put it above you.

And Gunstar Super Heroes and Guardian Heroes.

Well said.

Attached: genonod.gif (88x128, 10K)

They failed on almost every system.

Those were glorified ports for handhelds, not sequels

Don't talk shit about Red's game

Attached: 1551556880663.jpg (1280x720, 256K)

>Those were glorified ports
Those played nothing like the originals, they were entirely different in style, design and even story.

Attached: Pink.png (154x230, 10K)

So you're basing this entire thing off of... a hyperbolic assumption?

Not an assumption. An extrapolation.

Attached: 1528850729677.jpg (2976x2976, 2.95M)

From what? A reimagining of a Kunio-kun spinoff from the 90s that has about as much "girl power tripe" as Shantae and basically nothing to do with Mischief Makers? I don't even particularly care for Wayforward but you're not even trying to be objective

holy shit that's some incredible fan art

Another thing is that unless they'd already played the shit out of Mischief Makers, they might not realize the degree of creativity and sneaky bullshit that goes into the S-time methods. Sure, some stages only really require near-perfect play, but others like Missile Surf!! count on you knowing certain things about the typical construction and behavior of older 2D platformers. Or hell, Merco!! which is RNG as fuck for the exact moves and reactions he has to use to pull it off(that was the final S-time to crack by the western fanbase). Plus other little quirks, like alternating double-tapping the d-pad and using the c-buttons to air-boost makes you go faster than if you were only using one or the other.

Basically, and I don't mean this in any sort of disparaging way because I'm a huge Wayforward fan, but I would rather Mischief Makers never gets a sequel/remake unless the original dev team does it because I don't think anyone else can. It was absolute lightning in a bottle.

I dont understand her legs

Thighs containing crazy-ass hydraulics or whatever to account for her being able to carry around things with masses into the hundreds or thousands of kilograms, peg-leg feet for rapid dashing and pivoting.

but i liked yoshi story

I did too, though I'm also firmly in the camp that the game should have had you to play through all the levels as normal instead of the piecemeal playthrough method used. You also can't deny that the game was a massive downgrade and disappointment when compared to Yoshi's Island, and that colored a lot of peoples' experience.

The N64 controller was not meant for 2D games.

The majority would rather have great graphics and mediocre gameplay over great gameplay and pixel graphics, so technically they are right.

likewise, monolith has become the platinum/wayforward of jrpgs. so many retards on this site think that their open-world, gacha, faux-korean-mmo garbage is now the be all end all of jrpg game design.

>and basically nothing to do with Mischief Makers?
Listen to yourself. If WayForward's previous games have nothing to do with Mischief Makers, then why were they suggested in the first place? You would suggest they produce the game for the MERE fact that they make 2D games, and nothing else?

You know that was in reference to River City Girls and not their entire catalogue, right

I get that.(even though you inadvertently lumped Shantae in with RCG) But think about it like this: If RCG doesn't have anything to do with MM, then that just means they have an even weaker claim on MM.

Also, either you or another user literally referenced RCG as evidence. So logically, I just lumped that in with their other past work like Shantae, and extrapolated from there.

I ask again, what company would give a Mischief Makers successor justice? And not a hurr durr 5 year dead company is not a good answer.

the techniques required to get S rank time on most of the levels weren't what I would call obvious or easy to execute. Hell I didn't even know there WAS an S rank until decades after I played it.

I don't have the answer. I only know WayForward is the wrong answer. Perhaps no studio is capable of replicating what Mischief Makers is.

And Bangai-O Spirits
And Bleach: Dark Souls
And Gaist Crusher God

What a fucking dumb question. Why do you think 2D games failed on the N64?
