most WRPGs I've played are fundamentally broken from design, shooters are brainlet tier and other western-centric genres like ASSFAGGOTs shit all over the concept of game feel and the balance between mechanical execution and mental focus

The graphics might be 3D, but the levels and combat is pretty much 2D, which is why it was easy to port it to the GBA for example.
And all the weapons are pretty darn similar, unlike a contra where you have the spread, the laser, rapid fire etc.. where you have to think on which one is better for the scenario.
Also contra have a huge variety of enemies that you have to come up with strategies to beat em, while max payne is basically just humans and bullet sponge humans.

Then there's the whole platforming challenges.
