The way the game's whole 2d-3d shift mechanic works requires each player have their own screen, so you need 2 setups of the game, console, and displays to do normal local MP.

On switch they added splitscreen and an asymmetrical mode (where one player is in the foreground and the other background to try to get around it but the former doesn't run at 60fps AFAIK and the latter really isn'[t suitable for competitive play.
