I didn't know about steam until like 2010.
Bought physical copies before that and just pirated.
Then I got it because of a dumb joke in a chatroom, a bit later than that I found use for it and played the magicka demo through steam and started buying a few games through it.

If anything it saved the publishers money. Valve was just a shrewd player and charged the publishers to sell on their platform. It was a capitalist move and I am surprised that more publishers didn't try to edge in on valve earlier when they saw there was money to be saved by having their own distribution platform.
