Fun

We were naive back then and never knew what to expect from the games we bought. No one but those magazine-subbed faglords read reviews. It was a magical time.

Please enlighten us, o sagacious one.

I still think to this day that humanity is not ready/fit for the internet as a whole, we completely understimated the effects of it on every field not just vidya

At least they had to get it right the first time or would get flak and people would be aware. Now a days you can release dogshit for 60$ and patch it into a playable state after 6-24 months

God I wanna go back so bad. Playing fucking Mario Kart and Perfect Dark with the bros on the weekend and then actually getting that Dreamcast I had been begging for and playing it for hours on end like it was the greatest technological marvel I had ever seen. Not a care in the world. Please take me back.

Attached: 1549604996664.jpg (546x896, 54K)

The internet wasn't as big as it is now so if you bought a game, chances are you didn't know if it was good or not.

>Those South Park plushies
>Officer Barbrady and Chef
I miss old South Park

That's the way with all technology. 90+% of the population does not deserve it nor are they prepared for it.

>Drakan
I need to replay that

Attached: 26.jpg (800x600, 41K)

Better in every way to what it's like today. Gaming really died in 2007.

All that vidya and merch that probably went unsold and got chopped up and thrown in the dumpster out back so no one could have it. All of it lost like tears in rain.

Attached: 1543800912678.jpg (836x836, 54K)

Idk I was just born.

It was pretty nice. I do like modern conveniences, so I won't pretend that it was all sunshine and rainbows, but the industry practices were less shitty, companies were experimenting/expanding instead of making the same game every year, consoles were cheaper than they are now, and it wasn't nearly as politically charged.
It was easy to just grab a game you never heard of, and still have a good chance to have a great time.

Wholesome and innocent.

>trusting reviews

GOO GOO GA GA

That's why based blockbuster was around for renting instead of buying

Which game did you guys rent in the past that was so shit it ruined your weekend?

Everyone was playing car shit like Gran Turismo and Colin McRae Rally.
As far as my circle was confirmed, i was the only one playing RPGs.

Attached: 1449976757263.jpg (468x468, 24K)

Magazines were entertaining, there was basically no SJW shit and when someone tried they were laughed off, cheap as you could get used games for next to nothing, it was a niche hobby and treated as such. Pokemon saw an end to that.

>reviews
Just watch 5-10 minutes of a youtube video.

video games seemed to be advancing and hitting new levels of interactivity

Good times

Attached: liero_xtreme1.jpg (400x300, 19K)

I think at that age I would have more likely only cry and not make other sounds.

Magazines were actually pretty tough back then, there didn't seem to be the "in bed" attitude today where a shit AAA game will never get less than 7/10

Attached: 1384057988614.jpg (697x837, 267K)

Same as it is now, just a different coat of paint.

Can't think of one off the top of my head, but I rented brave fencer musashi so much I should have just bought it.

what happens if I click force things

This is why Nintendo gained such popularity and such intense fanboys. All of their fans were play-it-safers who knew they would be getting a good game but were afraid to take a chance on other companies.

You try and hope for the best and just end up in front of the prompt again. GG

Oh no we triggered the leftie

Video Game magazines were really cool, plus stuff like EGM2 and Gamefan were awesome because they had anime stuff in the back pages. 15yo me had no idea what all the Dragon Ball Z/GT stuff in those pages were but I thought it was the coolest shit ever.

Vor dem Gesetz.

Gee I wonder who could be behind this post

I actually don't get why that sort of subtlety has been lost to devs as of late. There were very clear games that had "political" messages back then. For example FF7 had its whole environmentally friendly message, but the game didn't really have that whole preachy undertone that a lot of shit now has.

please stop shitting up my comfy nostalgia thread with this please

>drakaan strategy guide
oh god how i wish i had that

>complains about propaganda
>sorrounded by daily rightwing propaganda on this very board
Whew

Difference is games used to explore in-universe politics between different factions like in Deus Ex or Fallout, not reference real life contemporary politics which just date the game.

Buy a JRPG and strategy guide from retail store. Hope it is good from magazine reviews. Hope the strategy guide is good because I had terrible access to internet.
Have fun playing Sonic Adventure and owning a Dreamcast before years in the future when everyone suddenly hates it.
This is before I could go to Funcoland because no transportation. Or buy games online because of crappy internet. Find out about good games from friends when I could go over to their houses. Playable demos in magazines. Rent anime on VHS from Blockbuster. Never knew if it would be good.

Games as a whole have been dumbed down to astonishing levels as the hobby has become wider and wider with many seeing it as a mouthpiece for their drivel that they couldn't get published in other mediums. There's no time for subtlety or passion in this niche hobby turned giant industry.

>don't spend a few bucks for a megazine with a review before spending 30 to 60 bucks on a game
People are so stupid
I bought megazines of course but still you'd often find unknown games barely reviewed on sales
With no internet back then sometimes you took a risk and sometimes it would end to become one of the best games you ever played

Other then that I'd say it was better because with no internet there were no "vocal minorities" polluting every discussion about anything.
This wasn't only about videogames though.
To be fair internet in the early years was really good.
There was always someone to talk to because people on the internet were on the internet because they wanted to meet someone and discuss about their passions.
After 2007 web2.0 people only cared about likes and karma.

I am mot familiar with it, what made it so great user?

>Black with red lights
Peak Terminator aesthetics.

It was great. No hillbillies and definitely no right-wing retards. The people that enjoyed exploring MediaPlay were just learning about anime or were interested due to Pokemon, and had respect for Japanese media.

TechTV was literally ALWAYS shit. They would start shows using bait hands-on reviews of games, spend twenty-five minutes shilling $2,000 TVs, then rush through the reviews without showing any gameplay.

>Miss Dynamite
You just gave me nostalgia and I'm starting to remember something now, isn't there a Miss Dynamite flash game where those two torture a member of N'Sync? It was either a guy from N'Sync or The Backstreet Boys. I'm pretty certain it was Miss Dynamite. In the game, I remember them driving a nail through one of his testicles and then it only escalates more, I think the asian girl ends up smashing it completely. It was really difficult for me to watch.

Looking forward to Gameboy Color games.

Great, i don't know how to feel about today though, sometimes it's great and sometimes it's shit, i feel like we would be happier if the internet ceased to exist, the world back then felt alive, the world today feels like a simulation

Man, all these feels.

It was great. I still remember when I used to go to this local game shop near me. Shit was magical. Demo kiosks (N64, PS1 and later PS2), shelves full of games, stacks of numerous magazine publications, some accessories and posters. Game boxart was actually really imaginative and varied.

Unfortunately, somewhere in the mid 00's the shopkeeper couldn't keep up with the expenses, assume because of competition from Gamestop, and had to move into a smaller space. Now, the shop has moved to a different address and merged with a fishing gear shop to stay afloat. It shares half the space than it originally used to.

Recently, found the original shop's old website on archive.org. Really takes me back.

Hyperbole.

>MTG
The mobile app and further SJW-ization of the medium is evidence of your wrongness

1997-2002 was the golden age of video games, most of the stuff that was made back then is not only the high watermark of technical (including art direction) excellence, but is something that would not even be tried today; too many liabilities in trying to ship a demanding product. some indie devs still try to follow suit - underrail, age of decadence, zachtronics stuff being good examples. rpgcodex is the only place i know that still retains some of that old gamer spirit despite shitposting inherited from millenial-zoomer boards like this shitplace.

>Oh hey a comfy 1999 video game thread.

Pretty much what said. When that Gamegate thing happened, a LOT of people and places changed. It was only two sides to everything for awhile.

>For awhile

it still is.

99 was the hypest year with the whole turn of the millennium thing.
I was 9 and dreaming pokemon was real all the time, being a poor huehue fag all i could do is rent megaman x on snes and drool over game magazines showcasing the pokemon gb games.

Hanging out with friends whose parents got them a computer and playing games with them.

My friends had heaps of those and I'd read them from time to time.
The reviews were quality, honest stuff and you could see they were written by passionate people.
Zero Punctuation is the only thing that still resembles that feeling nowadays.

Half-Life and Quake, literally everywhere and also that small community mod called Counter-Strike seems to be becoming really popular.

We still wear shitty clothes

i dont think so. everyone is more fashion conscious these days. at least people don't wear baggy clothes

Van exploding and chanology got my more normalfag friends on here. I'd say those were the start of the downward spiral.

Early internet was great. Everyone was educated and white. Now it’s nothing but trolls and third worlders.

I miss the old days of vidya game memes, pokegirl porn, RP tripfags and yes tripfags in general.

It was all better than what we have today.

Sorry Nintendo 1st party shit was always good GAMES even though people might not LIKE them?

Seriously, when has a 1st party main mario or zelda gotten a 5/10? Never.

And people don't believe me that gaming is shit now. Fuckers, i been playing games since 1985, i LIVED videogames.

I know what I'm fucking talking about.

So nothing?

Did they play MKT on 64?
Because besides having a shit exclusive character and bizarrely missing boss characters, it was the same shit.

Also, n64 didnt need a fucking option for shang tsung to morph into set characters or all the characters but add load times DURING A FIGHT, like ps1.

Games reached their highest point in utilizing 3D environments. Everything you loved about games then only got better and the less likely to find a bad game was higher in my experience.

The fuck is wrong with that dudes eye

>Now: "Here's my full name, address, phone number, face, voice and browsing history. Do you need my SSN too?"
Smartphones/ease of access and social media fucked everything.

b-but people are more polite when they post with their real name

Overall, it was very good. I was 15 in 1999. Played a lot of Counterstrike 1.5, Unreal Tournament or StarCraft at LANs and your typical Multiplayer games on N64 with school friends. I miss that time, even though we still play the old games from time to time.

Never thought the games industry would turn into the nightmare we have today.

It's just technology in general. We have this amazing resource that contains the collectiive sum of all human knowledge yet governments and corporations use it to collect reams of data on the shitting habits if nobodies. It's absolutely fucking absurd.

More interesting and diverse. Now companies know what sells and what doesn't and so video game won't be as experimental as they were in the past.

Buying games was like buying a lottery ticket. It was either a fantastic game or it was absolute garbage, but you played through it because you bought it. There were magazines to gave you a look into some games and get reviews, but it was mostly only games everyone was going to buy anyway.
You went to your friend's home and played games together, sometimes even stayed and ate dinner, their mom was like your second mom and sometimes made better food than your own, it was great.
No fuss, no console wars because if your friend had a console you didn't have you get to play games on it as well and vice versa, just playing games and having fun.

Fucking this. My parents gave me the lecture on being anonymous at the very least. The internet should be just anonymous/handles shooting the shit with eachother. I blame facebook.

whats the game displayed at the top of the pillar the one with the south park dolls at the bottom?

In a few years kids will say the same shit about us

Bullshit, Facebook proves that people don't care except insecure fucks that wanna appeal to many people.

>buying magazines
>being a n64 owner

You could try them on good systems before buying them.

There also was blockbuster/rental stores. It wasn’t a pure gamble as the olds say it was.

Such a complete goddamn package. I had to set shit to low to play it on my potato back then but I loved it.

No DLC, no loot boxes, no "woke-ness"

Things with entry barriers. Heavily-modded old games (e.g. Freelancer MP servers for a long time), things like Daggerfall Unity, TES3MP, SS13, etc.. Most of it is evaporating though.
Wrong. Acq Inc saw to that. Now the likes of Matt Mercer are shitting everything up with exposure, and the books for a lot of TTRPGs suggest that the companies are infested with bluehairs

to be fair, most people i knew got their nintendo power subscription for free.

>What was it like being a gamer in 1999?
I born in 1979, so 1999 hit me on my 20´s. It was an odd time. PSX was for like 4 years, Zelda and Dreamcast appeared and PS2 was over the horizon so it felt like a long, long year of change/transition.

31 year old boomer here. it was absolutely the best time to grow up. the late 90s were the shit

>325 pesetas
Less than 2 fucking euros, those were the times...

>Those rows of thick Prima strategy guides

I miss it, bros. God damn.

Roughly 4 out of 5 NES games were complete shit, no matter how cool the cover looked. Many a weekend was I forced to go play outside with my friends because I chose something unplayable.

You would be surprised how many games these days have none of that

>ehrgeiz strategy guide
I NEED IT

>Ehrgeiz
OH SHIT FUCK NOSTALGIA BOMB

What is this? Was it edited?

It's unedited and from Fallout 2.

Probably a very sociable time but I was too much of a poorfag to enjoy it just like I am now.

Fucking fantastic. Enjoy your FunkoStops and Ecelebs, zoomies.

fuck I remember this. No wonder I didnt give a shit about the NES Mini. Such a bloated game catalog

man, I was poor as fuck but I sure enjoyed way more playing with friends and with my only 3 cartridges at the time

>games cost like 10 euros tops
>no shoehorned political shit
>no DLCs
>no preorder bullshit
>no microtransactions
>you actually owned the game
>comfy vidya magazines

It was a magical time.

Shit dude what are you doing here?

Exciting. You never knew what was around the corner with video games and it was always awesome to see a sequel announced in game magazines. Also I really miss how baggy clothes use to be, sure it looks terrible now but they were so comfy

>anime

You were the cancer.

TnT was pretty fucking great. I still use some of the guides for maps and shit, and they had a good content-to-ads ratio.

Shame that Larry Flint fucked everyone on the stafd over while they were gone to E3

It's people just like you that make me want to go back.

right?! if only I wasn’t a broke kid back then.

>tfw I want to slip back in time, not to do anything great, but to buy vidya shit in mint condition
Something went terribly wrong in my life

>too poor to have the shit you wanted back then
>rich enough to have all the absolute shit tier junk now that I'm grown up though
I fucking hate modern consoles.

life isn’t fair!!!!

kid
>all the time in the world to play games
>no money to buy them

adult
>now have money to buy whatever
>but no time to play
>also most games are shit now

>subhuman newyorkers
yfw all these guys are construction workers now and their ratchet ass bitches are pregnany junkies.

I'm so fucking happy I moved away from the east coast the moment I turned 18

Superman 64

I was just thinking about this when elementary teachers said to never give your first name online for internet safety because the internet was seen as dangerous, but now that concern is nonexistent after years of social media. It makes me wonder how schools teach kids about internet safety now that nearly everyone is connected and not afraid to post with their real life identity.

You're probably right. That place has seriously only gotten worse. The year I graduated there was freshman with a huge ass that was famous for showing it off on the internet. She got into fights every single day and bit out a chunk of one of the security guards hands.
Where are you now?

In 1999?

>Rented a bunch of stuff since games were expensive and didn't drop in price often. N64 titles were many times $60-70 bucks and $30-40 bucks were considered to be a decent sale. Only time you saw games less then that they were either greatest hits or bargain bin stuff.

>Internet was not like it was now and had to rely on magazines or word of mouth. That is how I found out about stuff like Final Fantasy, Ocarina of Time, etc.

>No cell phones so game boy was king. Rechargeable batteries are not as good as todays and not as common, so it ate them like a motherfucker.

>Pokemon was absolutely huge and didn't have the baggage the series has now.

>N64 was gaining momentum, Playstation was pretty much already the main console for most kids I knew in my area, and Saturn was dead. Dreamcast was a curiosity when it came out, but I didn't know a lot of people who had one.

>Babbages was my main go-to, as well as a little import video game store in Nashville that is still around, but went to shit a decade ago. Gamestop wasn't really much of a thing yet and was still fairly small.

>This was around the time they started to card for M rated games, so I started to buy stuff like Resident Evil on eBay (long before Amazon was reliable). Used this tactic for years and bought other kids stuff with it, made some decent cash on the side.

Honestly, it was simpler. We didn't have all the crap surrounding the video game market that we do now and it felt like the wild west of discovery.

>System Shock
>Thief
>HoMM3

>tfw will never relive 1999

I just want that one year.

Every game was fun.

why is that image weird to you

nowadays i don't even buy games. i just watch them be played online. it's a sad state of affairs, but it's probably saved me a ton of money.

baggy clothes was cool back then

i don't play games anymore but i say still spend more on gaming than i did when i was a gamer due to twitch subs and donations

I used to store very old gamepro magazines and read them for nostalgia once in a while. One day my mom threw them all into the garbage. Was really funny seeing the writers go nuts over graphics and then you see the screens with shitty old ps1 graphics lol

Attached: tumblr_mlcmu3WQnw1rkrwaco1_1280.jpg (1280x1706, 938K)

I had Nintendo power and EGM but I think often I would get the copies after a game had already released. I mostly planned my awaited game purchases and trying of new games on box art and word of mouth. The game magazine were mostly good because they had snippets for stuff which would eventually be coming out.

What the fuck is wrong with magazines douche cock? Back then journalists took their job seriously. Also the only other way to get news was to go down to Toys R Us and talk to the employees.

>Yea Forums whines about gamestop having figures and plushies
“reee game stores used to only have games”
>op has tons of figures and plushies
Hmmmm

great cause all you fucks were not able to talk yet or young enough to not ruin culture

growing up in post-commie shithole

>only widespread console are Chinese copies of NES. PCs are mostly Amiga 500, Commodore 64, IBM 286 to 486. Real PC is considered a luxury.
>most games you have probably came with your console or PC.
>90% of games not translated. If not good with English, had to play with dictionary in hand.
>for newer games you had to drive 20km to nearest marketplace to buy pirated copies, which would cost ap.10% of your monthly pay. Per CD.
>local bar has pay-to-play Playstation, and it gets more attention than slot games.
>only stable internet is in government buildings. Some random dude might be using telephone modem, which sis expensive.
>modern games is something you only get to see in gaming magazines.

Are you from Yugoslavia because you perfectly described my childhood

>subs and donations
Do these people really bring you that much joy?

I kept going west. Then I went west more and hopped the IDL, and then I went west more and now I'm in europe. If I go even more west I'll have made an entire loop. I go to visit my parents in new england about once every two years I enjoy the short time I'm there but fuck the east coast is super depressing.

>he didn't thumb through the magazines at the grocery store to get cheat codes and reviews
