WRPG

I wish Japs would make a shorter RPG (20-40 hours) that has strong replay value. While I enjoyed the grand adventure of DQXI, few JRPGs keep me engaged for 100+ hours. I would love most Persona games if they didn't drag things out so much.

Why aren't there any Dragon Quest games where you get the really cool girl as your first party member? They always hold her off for twenty hours. Is it just because every other party member would be fucking boring by comparison?
Also when are we getting a new DQ Monsters?

Attached: 1539809928360.png (848x1200, 1.05M)

I don't get the appeal of Dragon Quest. It's artstyle is just that shitty Dragon Ball artstyle.

Depends who you mean specifically by the "really cool girl" of each game.

Most people like Toriyama's art. Of course some people don't, which is natural. Some people don't like Jack Kirby's art, doesn't mean that most people don't.

I mean if you just don't wanna have a discussion that's fine too, but a lot of people like it. I think that it has looked pretty bad in 3D but 11 is actually the first example I've seen of a manga's style perfectly translating to a simulated space game.

Lets compared xenoblade 2 with D:OS. XC2 does the same thing as the OS's world/battle transition except it's not turn based, environmental hazards are in play, blade combos (which create seals to block off tributes/moves) and driver combos (incapacitate/burst damage) combine to create fusion combos which increase the effects of both combo paths and apply bonuses, such as extra party gauge, increased special build up, etc. Then you have other things to consider; positioning, pouch items, type of enemy, elemental weakness/resistance are some of those. On top of this, the game has a canceling mechanic that requires proper timing to boost specials and arts. Behind the scenes, characters are completely customizable with different blades that change stats, classes, abilities, passives, and certain ones have special prioritizes which change up how the game work (e.g. corsette brings a new dynamic to potion collection which increases fusion combo damage, an extra incentive to give up positioning to collect potions rather than just health). I haven't even gone over additional mechanics like just range or affinity, the latter which intertwines narrative elements into gameplay, something further emphasized with the DLC in terms of blade partnership vs ownership.

I challenge any wRPG fag to find a wRPG with a more involved and satisfying combat system

>wRPGfags will never know the feeling of stacking combos and timing a level 3's invulnerability frames to negate a party devastating AoE into a chain attack with 4 orbs build up into a full burst
maybe if wRPGs had good gameplay they wouldn't all be dead aside from shit eating normies who buy TES

BONUS: no wRPG has come close to the exploration of xenoblade X. No wRPG has come close to the story of xenogears, the closest is planescape torment which had it's world copy-pasted from DnD instead of creating a rich one like gears/saga as well as having a largly irrelevant cast (only party member that matters is morte).

Attached: chad.png (300x200, 67K)

Arguing about whether Western games or Japanese games are better is literally the dumbest shit
Japan and the United States are each other's best friends and they've had a cultural exchange like no other in human history, it really isn't surprising that they've both borrowed elements of each other's video games regardless of who borrowed more or what borrowing is more important

Optimal JRPG is 30 hours with multiple routes and endings.

>Why aren't there any Dragon Quest games where you get the really cool girl as your first party member
DQ V and DQ VIII

Yes in my doujins

I think the most vital difference is in regards to world interaction. Even the oldest WRPGs had stuff like marriage, buying property, all that kind of optional stuff that helps you feel more immersed.

JRPGs don't tend to have that, and it's to their detriment. Sadly now WRPGs are going the same route.

All party members in Torment are optional. Unlike Xenoblade, they can permanently die or leave the party depending on your actions.

So Nordom, the automaton who has gained a will of his own, is not exploring the theme of identity? Or Fall-From-Grace, the chaste succubus who went against her own nature? Name a few, if you're so brave

I've played a ton of JRPGs, but I just can't understand the appeal. They feel like they want to be movies, with barebones gameplay that you only have to button mash through to proceed. It just never seems to change. Whether I'm bored out of my mind from Neptunia and it's ironic humor, Final Fantasy and its attempts to constantly reinvent the wheel, Xenoblade's 500 billion hours of cutscenes, Persona just wanting to be a high school simulator, and so on. I genuinely think that the Mario RPGs are the peak of the genre because who cares about the story in a mario game? The gameplay is what's important. And because it doesn't have typical waifus or deep storytelling, they have to grab your attention with solid gameplay. Yes, they might be a little easy, but that's nothing that a few romhacks won't fix.

>Why would you evn bring this up when you are immortal? You can't die to begin with.
gameplay narrative dissonance, why have combat if failure is essentially impossible? You should also start a new character each time you fall in battle in PT but that doesn't happen

>what is friendly fire (a feature conspicuously absent from the xenoblade games)
something not present of a good portion of PT's spells, most notoriously cloudkill
>And nukes only take up a small portion of Torment's magic list.
which you won't waste your spell slots with because it's more efficient to fill it with nukes

>The most important stat in the game is wisdom, which isn't tied to any class
and int/chr right after it, the other stats may as well not exist. If you choose to invest in them instead of these three, the narrative becomes worse
>you can freely switch classes at any time
limited to TNO only compared to XC2's entire party

>All party members in Torment are optional. Unlike Xenoblade, they can permanently die or leave the party depending on your actions.
that's great, there are 10 additional blades who are also optional found in via exploration.

>So Nordom, the automaton who has gained a will of his own, is not exploring the theme of identity?
no because he isn't part of the narrative in the slightest. If you want to include him, you can include poppi in the xenoblade side as well
>Or Fall-From-Grace, the chaste succubus who went against her own nature
this is not related more to fate than identity, and isn't actually explored in game since the change has already occurred prior to meeting her
>All the party members are usd to explore the theme of identity, as well as various NPCs
ah, yes. The pyromaniac certainly explores the theme well

>consistent use of leitmotif
leitmotif's can be used incorrectly, xenoblade 2 has a heavy usage of them as well especially Mitsuda's tracks
>different combat tracks for different areas
2 (maybe 3? Don't remember if final area had a special theme). Xenoblade 2 had 4 regular battle themes, several boss battle themes, and even battle music

>Mario RPG
>maybe 10 minutes of cutscenes, no pretentious cinematic storytelling like "dude religion is evil" or "dude politics lmao"
>no shoehorned romances taking up half the game
>gameplay rewards timing and paying attention during battle, instead of just queueing up commands from a text box
>really fun minigames like booster hill, minecarts, even casinos
>less characters = more focus on each character

Take Mario and Luigi for example. I only ever have to worry about leveling them and giving them gear. So there's room for more gear that's better balanced. Also, each character can have more fun and unique moves and attacks. The first game was stellar with this, heavily rewarding good timing with higher damage. And then you unlock advanced bros moves, and the game just got even better.

Yeah.

source? I have trouble believing that considering it gets almost 0 talk ( 5 million would make it one of the highest selling wRPGs of all time). It sold 700k in the first month, xenoblade 2 did 1.06 million (source wikipedia for former, nintendo IR for latter)

Also with console versions, 5 million copies are easily reached.

jotting down a list of mechanics isn't bragging, I didn't even cover them all really. I'm missing stuff like just range or invincibility frame abuse for heavy AoEs

No. It can have plenty of button mashing

Try button mashing during a bros attack then. *chuckles* See where that gets you.

steam spy has not been reliable since steam changed its policy regarding it, 2m-5m should be a clear indication isn't a retarded metric. Games sell through most of their sales in the first month with very rare exceptions (OS2 not being one of them, it's not GTAV or mario). No official numbers exist that state it sold more. I was not aware OS2 was available on consoles however (why the fuck would you play a cRPG on a console) and I will consider it a possibility that it did outsell xenoblade 2. Even then, it's a hollow victory considering it would have a 200m+ install base compared to XC2's (now at 1.8 million sales) with an install base of

I use regular attacks and dodge all the simple attacks thrown my way since the game was made for five year olds. To add insult to injury I equip the Mush Badge and break the game with a single item. >FACT: JRPG's are the best
Would be if Gothic 2 didn't exist.

She looks like she fucks BLACK men.

>gameplay narrative dissonance
What dissonance? If you want to talk about dissonance, why are you ignoring XB2's flaws in that regard. We are talking about a game where you can fast-travel even if you are stuck into prison. Care to explain that one? Or how about the fact that if you defeat bosses in combat, they end up defeating you in the following cutscene anyway.

>something not present of a good portion of PT's spells, most notoriously cloudkill
Okay, now I've know you've never played the game. Cloudkill most certainly has friendly fire, as do all AoE spells in Torment that deal damage.

>which you won't waste your spell slots with because it's more efficient to fill it with nukes
Except you can't do that. Spell slots are tied to specific levels, and most don't have nukes. E.g. you can't fill level 1 spell slots with nukes because none of the level 1 spells are nukes.

Furthermore, nukes tend to be the least useful spells in D&D. Buffing and debuffing spells are much more useful.

>that's great, there are 10 additional blades who are also optional found in via exploration.

>you don't need to kill gods for them to be involved. You know God is a good guy in xenoblade 2 right?
That doesn't change the fact that Xenoblade 2 is a dime a dozen shonen story while Planescape: Torment is the most well-written video game story of all time.

No, fuck off. Anyone with a brain can instantly tell comparing a fucking by the numbers waifu shounen game to artistic labours of love with some of the best writing and gameplay respectively in the genre is dishonest at best and offensive at worst.

It's alright because this meaningless buzzword raid will eventually end while posts like OPs have been around since the beginning of Yea Forums and will continue to be her35

Great combat system especially in the sequel, shit everything else including the girls.

I'm a catperson

no, im not going to bow down to some anime bitch. fuck you

I am acknowledging dissonance, I didn't pit it against planescape until you brought up immortality. Obviously, dying and having to restart the game is a terrible decision (especially when trias can instant kill you with cloudkill, great design). Likewise, constantly locking fast travel in a game largely focusing on exploration is shit. In the case of bosses, I would take a fun boss fight over just getting my ass kicked in a cutscene, many fights you get your ass kicked in after you don't even drain the boss health fully

>Cloudkill
in my entire play-through of PT, not a single ally died to cloudkill despite spamming it to get through the shit combat. This tells me one of two things, 1. there isn't friendly fire for a large majority of spells or 2. it's greatly reduced in potency and largely irrelevant when you can pause to heal

>Furthermore, nukes tend to be the least useful spells in D&D
no comment on D7D as a whole, but nukes are certainly the best option in PT

>You were the one who were lying about how many party members there are in Torment. I was just correcting you.
party member scouting was in the context of exploration, which is limited to vhailor and nordem alone. You would have to be retarded to miss out on the other party members

>Nordem
ok, sure. Add him for the final line alone, add poppi (another robot) to my side as well for the scene in land of morytha

>It's a change she's still struggling with
"struggle" isn't the word I'd use when she's set up a brothel and denies all advances (except from TNO because of attraction from torment)

>He does, yes. It's an example of how passions can overtake your identity.
you can apply this to almost every single character. hell, add Bana to the xenoblade side if you add ignis

>That doesn't change the fact that Xenoblade 2 is a dime a dozen shonen story while Planescape: Torment is the most well-written video game story of all time.
not going to address this, you ignored the point entirely.

>if by each you mean all 2
Over a dozen, actually.

>and only in their intial meeting places
They play whenever you talk to the characters.

>Xenoblade 2 had 4 regular battle themes
Planescape: Torment has 5 regular battle themes.

The fact that a 20 hour wrpg where combat almost never occurs has more regular battle themes than a 100+ hour jrpg that is all about combat is...troubling to say the least.

And Planescape: Torment is actually on the lower side compared to other wrpgs. Deus Ex for example is also a 20-hour wrpg, one where combat is entirely avoidable, and it has more than 20 different regular battle themes.

Why do western games do this so often?

>a labor of love wouldn't copy paste existing material without changing it
All the characters in Torment are original creations, as are most of the locations. And they didn't copy-paste anything, by that logic a game that takes place in New York is just copy-pasting real-life.

>Why do western games do this so often?

you're right, I was thinking of the main plot alone and not the character interaction. I retract my character statement

>PT has 5 regular battle themes
I forgot the other two, in any case 5 regular battle themes, no boss themes, no event battle themes puts it at a deficit.

>deus ex
arrangement of field music

JRPGfags play games to have fun
WRPGfags play games to posture online for ecred. It's as simple as that. Notice how WRPG-kun spends all his time complaining about JRPGs instead of actually playing his beloved WRPGs

>they didn't copy-paste anything
blatant lie

>new york
>comparing a fantasy world to a real life location

To be fair I’d be doing that too if my favourite games were as fucking dry and boring as WRPGs.

>All the characters in Torment are original creations
so annah, the character with less clothing and official whored out art than the characters in XC2, who was not pulled from existing content, is not waifu shit? interesting

Attached: scooby.png (499x465, 217K)

>blatant lie
Post the proof then. It shouldn't be hard. Just torrent the planescape tabletop material and compare it to what's in the game.

>arrangement of field music
False. the combat tracks in Deus Ex are completely distinct from the field tracks.

What exactly is 'Puff Puff'?

Attached: grug.jpg (353x400, 20K)

>post the proof then
your statement is "they didn't copy-paste anything", so all I need to do is state something (one thing) they did

lady of pain

Holy shit XC2fags are almost as embarrassing as their game.

>including the girls.
add in me in Rumblr right now faggot

Making posts like this is the equivalent of mumbling at your feet. What do you think nobody can see you?

he's too afraid to actually debate, he knows he can't. It's a childish reaction

Reverse motorboating

Pathfinder King Maker, Deus Ex MD and KC:D where the only WPRGs in the like past decade that actually liked. Now Xenoblade 2 blows em all out of the water in every department besides maybe plot, and "actual" roleplaying since jrpgs (the good ones) have always been about fun and simple yet deep combat while wrpgs (the good ones) are more about simulating a world and you "being" the character

Attached: lost-odyssey.jpg (562x800, 239K)

>Now Xenoblade 2 blows em all out of the water in every department
LMAO

>Now Xenoblade 2 blows em all out of the water in every department besides maybe plot, and "actual" roleplaying
Christ you JRPG cucks are deluded

Fuck off ESL

>Yeah I like this game and-
>FUCK YOU ESL KEK FUCK YOU FUCK YOU WAIFU TRASH YOUR GAME IS TRASH CHRIST DELUSIONAL KEK LMAO.
You guys ever notice how overly aggressive WRPGfags are? It's kind of weird to get so worked up over toys isn't it?

The problem with most JRPGs is that all the encounters are just easy dumb bs until you get to the boss. Most encounters can be mashed through, with the exception of some status attacks. I admit I have mainly only tried mainstream JRPGs but I would love to play a game in which every encounter could be deadly, or even meaningful

>worked up over toys isn't it?
Says the Xenotrash 2 faggot.
kek

yeah, all without arguments. Sad really how they have to invade jRPG threads since no one else cares about their games

Attached: 37373728266262.jpg (1440x1440, 822K)

>TRASH FAGGOT KEK
Again, these are toys you're getting flustered about. Planescape is only at the level of a bottom of the barrel genre fiction novel, not even close to approaching even the simplest of high school literature in depth or complexity. Why get so worked up?

t. gamer

Anyone praising pure weeb tripe like XC2 like that deserves to be ridiculed

>It's kind of weird to get so worked up over toys isn't it?

Says the person OBSESSED enough to go to all the effort to make this despite clearly not having even played at least one of the games in question

8 is still better than 11.its kinda sad. fucking SE man. 1 step forward 3 back. (i liked 11 still.)

Baste negro

Provide arguments first

I only made that list after images like were spammed countless times in jRPG threads. I don't think it's unreasonable to make a single image for threads of a genre I like, compared to the myriad of shit this guy has made to enter threads of a genre he hates. The guy you're responding to isn't me by the way.

>Everybody who upsets me is the same person
This is a sign of an underdeveloped mind. No wonder you like WRPGs and shun books
>WEEB TRIPE. TOYS ARE SRS BZNESS
You must be 18 years or older to browse this website.
What does that have to do with my post pointing out the unnecessarily hostile nature of WRPGfags? Are you okay?

Dark Souls is the best JRPG

Damn this really struck some wrpgfags nerves. Good work

That's understandable, but XB2 is still weebtrash while Planescape is one of the most unique and imaginative things I've ever experienced in all of gaming.

Dark Souls is a WRPG

>one of the most unique and imaginative things I've ever experienced in all of gaming.
Alrest is a hundred times more unique and imaginative than porting over D&D and inserting some new characters. If you want an actual imaginative wRPG, games like fallout are more out there than PT

This. WRPGfags in general should play more tabletop. That does require friends though which might be a sticking point.

>Alrest is a hundred times more unique and imaginative
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Is this weeb for real?

you can call XC2 weebtrash, but don't imply the world isn't unique or imaginative. You make yourself look like an idiot, especially when planescape's world isn't even PT's

I can think of a few
FPS
Fighting
Fantasy Sports
Survival "Horror" and "Horror" (aka jump scares the genre)
2D platformers

Are you physically capable of doing anything but mentioning FF and Persona strawman's? There are so many fucking JRPGs out there you must actually have two extra chromosomes to think that FF and a spin off branch of a JRPG series accounts for all of them.

Attached: 5586337.png (774x417, 180K)

Not it didn't first one sold only 1 million and second one probably less than than.

>1 million and second one probably less than than.
Based retard

no he cannot, I have called him out with the xenoblade series and he has never been able to produce an argument against me. I'm sure you can do the same with series like Ys

Is that picture meant to prove anything? It looks like anything an 8 year old could come up with scribble.

Fucking embarrassing

They're not even good criticisms of Persona either is the worst part.
>WOAH THIS GAME FOCUSING ON HIGH SCHOOL KIDS IS DIFFERENT THAN THIS GAME ABOUT VAMPIRES WHAT THE FUCK????

You are the one that is retard. Last official sales numbers for OS are that it sold 500k by September 2014.

Based retard

calm down, it's just a video game

>no argument

>Hans can't defend his xenotrash
kek

yes, you have yet to present one

>Different games focus on different things
Woah dude, you've liked, totally enlightened me, I appreciate you posting that shitty image you proudly took 30 minutes to make. It really changed my way of viewing games!

wccftech.com/divinity-original-sin-2-85m-revenue-2017/

>Divinity: Original Sin 2 Generated $85M in Revenue Last Year According To SuperData Research

Despite coming out in late 2017, having zero marketing and only coming out on PC (console parts only happened later), it was still one of the best-selling games of 2017.

Notice how there isn't a single jrpg included in that list, despite a bunch of them coming out in 2017 and having way more marketing.

Attached: 1552160582431.gif (366x256, 3.62M)

>waaa the game only has 60 hours of gameplay
Fuck off.

>Are you physically capable of doing anything but mentioning FF and Persona strawman's? There are so many fucking JRPGs out there you must actually have two extra chromosomes to think that FF and a spin off branch of a JRPG series accounts for all of them.

Yeah, not all jrpgs use menu-based systems. I mean, recently we had jrpgs like DQ11 and Octopath which are totally different.

Oh wait...

Attached: 1557065337364.png (600x580, 572K)

VN is not gameplay.

Who lit the fuse on Xfags tampon today?

He's literally been waiting for four hours for someone to respond. Why would you give him attention.

>replay value
Nah

I don't get it. What is this collage supposed to indicate?

Attached: 1538583806856.jpg (1280x720, 262K)

$85m divided by 60 (average price of the editions of OS2) is roughly 1.4 million in sales. Persona 5 was over 2 million in 2017 while DQXI was over 4 million, clearly something isn't lining up or they don't have japanese values

Attached: spongefish.jpg (500x395, 32K)

This is what XC2fags are praising? Looks like complete weeb dogshit

>Xfags
It's just Xeno2 faggots, you never hear anything about X1 and XCX people because they don't need to defend those good games.
Also Xeno2 faggots are only switch users, that system doesn't have any good jrpgs.

Oh no not menu based systems! The horror!

I used XC2 over XCX as a mercy, do you really want to compare shit world designs of wRPGs with planet Mira? Everything I said about XC2 applies to XC1 except the depiction of god

Attached: geralt.jpg (289x424, 36K)

Octopath and DQ11 share very few common branches like random encounters and the general idea of EXP but if you can't see the raw number of difference between the two that just proves you can do nothing but shitpost about strawmen that help prove your little arguments right. WRPGs have plenty of similarities but I'm not dumb enough to say their all the same, a few common traits don't mean they are the same game you absolute dumbass.

>Persona 5 was over 2 million in 2017
And despite this, Atlus is still not making profits.

correct, they are faggots who try to milk their materials and they all fail. I didn't even like P5 very much. That's besides the point though

Persona 5 is actually at 2,7 millions and that is on only one relevant platform, Divinity is on 3 relevant platforms.

It happens if you only make one game a decade

cum󠛡brain thread

>Atlus is still not making profits.

And how would you know that?

Cope

Not best, but very good.
Pros:
>Story is usually pretty good
>Super long games 80+ hours (When I was a poor kid growing up, this meant the world to me)
>Not afraid to tone switch or go into strange taboo topics/symbolism
>Immersion is intense and you will have feels
>Physical copies usually retain good resale value. no clue why.
CONS
>Grindy
>Can hit weird difficulty spikes and Does shit job explaining anything
>Those chances it takes with story telling and tone shift can not pay off and be cringey and gay

JRPGs have their own little place in many peoples hearts. Western RPGs are pretty good but they are seriously night and day from each other.

That's not how fishnets work?

This shit is meant to be unqiue and imaginative? I can barely see anything from the terrible graphics and I can still notice it is just generic JRPG world

Source?

that's what these fags get for no SMTV. P5's characters are all shit aside from yosuke, so the side material sells like shit

personacentral.com/atlus-financial-fiscal-year-2019/

The loss is from an ongoing repayment and isn't due to any problems with game sales and marketing.
>inb4 cope seethe twitter buzzword

repayment for what? weren't they bought out by sega?

It is due to the amortization of business rights with repayments taking place every fiscal period

Not them, but considering P5 took over 5 years to make with a large team, I imagine the sales weren’t quite enough.

>The loss is from an ongoing repayment
An ongoing repayment they have to make because Atlus is so incompetent that

>a simple turn-based rpg with virtually no interactivity or world simulation had a bigger team size and a longer development time than sprawling triple-a open-world rpgs

Attached: 178132732721.jpg (3152x2470, 773K)

Hard Mode + Level Limit was a lot of fun even if a few areas were capped really low like the desert boss

Well you would be incorrect. Atlus’ balance sheet indicates an equity ratio of 90.5% and a current ratio of 592.0%, indicating a high level of financial soundness. You can literally look up their balance sheet in the article you posted.

Oh. Keep in mind that's in thousands of yen too.

Why does them getting bought out and having to amortize business rights mean they're incompetent? Are you okay? Did you just want to post your epic image?

Except having actually difficult fights at every random encounter would make people drop the game within the first hour. There's nothing fun about having to constantly buff yourself for several turns and then debuff your enemy just to deal with them, not to mention all the grinding for money just to keep up assuming you can't heal from save points or something.

Oh wise sage of the pussy, enlighten us! How do stockings work?!

>all those repeating names
why you have to be so misleading?

At least post best girl

Attached: dccb7e81-s.jpg (570x321, 55K)

Well this is the same guy who's either willfully pretending net income>net worth or he's so stupid he actually believes that.

If she's wearing just fishnets there's no material between the links. Most girls will just wear tights underneath them if needs be.

Early game EO games are a matter of life and death.

DUDE PORN LMAO

>misleading
The comparison is actually limited to only core staff. If you include the full staff, P5 would look even worse by comparison, since it has like a billion people credited for making those anime cutscenes.

And most of P5's staff names are included in paragraphs with no line breaks. If you redid the credits to have the same format, P5's would be even longer

>all those repeating names
Care to point them out?

>Dude if I time travel into the past before she was impregnated by monsters it's like it like she's a virgin again and totally pure!

>But hey at least in this one timeline she's pure, except for the fact when we have Guru unlock her hidden potential it unlocks her succubus form she got from fucking monsters in the other timeline making me question if I actually changed anything

But what if I only like good games?

DQ VIII or XI to start

JRPGs already have insane replay value. It's almost always way more fun to replay a game than to play a new one.
