This is the cheapest and laziest shit ever. So many books, anime, movies, and some games do this, it feels so artificial. TLoU in particular has one of the worst writing in videogames, but also some of the most impressive production values. Probably the only writing in vidya that comes close to being decent is Planescape Torment's.

That is not the intention of an early character death. It's literally impossible for anyone to sympathize with the death of a character without extended exposure to the character. People may say they feel sorry, or sympathize, but they're either putting on a face to not seem like a robot or they're attempting to wrap their head around literary mechanics they don't understand.

If a character dies early on, and this character is in some way related to the protagonist, it's intent is to display a piece that is removed from the protagonist. Then, the character arc begins to form around trying to either cope with or replace that missing piece, and is a justification for the motives of the protagonist.
