The way I understand it, you can only ask for a refund if you opened the crate yourself, not if you bought an unusual directly.

The first hat you bought will be tradeable on the market, the other 2 will be tradelocked but still wearable. You can get your steambucks you paid for those two back if you want (exactly what you paid, not the current market price) or you can keep them.

Scout update was when the quality started to decline for me, but F2P / Mannconomy were what made me leave the game and never come back. What I wouldn't give for Valve to have just left the game alone after the Heavy Update, those were the best times for the game. The only problem with the game at that time was the Natascha being shit, everything else was perfect.

It's fun but it's a lot different from CS. Just keep in the mind the default settings suck ass, and most qol options are off by default. Also some classes like Soldier or Demoman use projectile weapons
If you do I suggest playing on Payload maps to get familiar with it. CTF maps are cancer because of how easy they are to stalemate so most people go there to TDM instead.
Stock weapons are generally the best, unlockable weapons are good for different playstyles or utility. Scout, Heavy, and Sniper would be good if you're coming from CS, Soldier is a good way to get used to projectile weapons.
