Here's my hot take.
The reason no culture fags and people who are ignorant about folklore continue to talk like America doesn't have one is largely due to us not really having legends that have a hero, so they're more in line with everyday occurence in a sense. Nobody thinks about, say, Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil at a crossroads being a part of a mythos, nobody considers things like the Ozark Howler or the myriad of abandoned towns that are said to be haunted by coal workers as legend. Somehow even things that would quantify as one, like the larger than life interpretations of Jessie James or The Zodiac Killer don't get a pass when something like Jack The Ripper or the White Death does.
I think it stems from a lot of american tales needing facts before fiction, in a sense. You can see it even in the stories we tell kids. Local ones are less once upon a time, and more grounded, starting with things like your aunt, your dad, your grandma, before they shift to the unreal. It's so that even meeting the devil because you wandered off a path just seems common sense and less mythical than other folklore and legend especially compared to things like the Gaelic fae and the sort. It makes American legends and tales equal parts less interesting for outsiders, yet far more engaging for those involved with it on a personal local level

A pretty decent take. It's also likely due to the age of America: it's a lot easier to lend your tales mythical qualities when they're so many generations far gone that nobody can even imagine the mundane circumstances that led to people sharing weird ass stories about them.

My take is that non-burgers get upset when they realize America has more of an outrageous and fascinating set of cultures across their regions formed in less than 300 years than their country might have in a history spanning millennia. Seeing somebody imply that "White Americans" or America has no culture is a laugh riot. For instance, our culture was practically enamored with reading, and studying the classics of literature or philosophy in your free time was taken as a noble pursuit. This more or less died with the radio, though. Our society has changed so quickly since its inception that there is no real public consciousness for anything other than the past two decades at best. My university has a small library to the history of my state alone, and it is stunning how different the place was, and how all these little changes are remembered by nobody.

Anyways, for such a young country, our folklore is decent. The cryptids are cool. It requires much more time to create a genuinely interesting culture, so it's not too bad.
