Because it's Ubisoft's model now. Their endgame is to sell season passes. This version of the game includes the season 1 toons only. There's also a version that doesn't include any toons that's super cheap all year 'round. Same as in Siege. You can play all the toons though but you can't unlock stuff for them and it's not all cosmetic.

i quit when they nerfed conq and it was just warlord with his throw and the generic knight guy whose name escapes me
and peacekeeper. it had about the worst balance of any fighting game ever, and it became clear that the devs either couldn't or wouldn't address it

i will say that i have played a ton of fighting games and there was something about for honor that made people lose their minds. it was probably the 1v1 and 2v2 map deaths. and just the overall feeling that the game was chintzy
