The entire ffvii plot can be divided in three sections: Shinra (ends at midgar, probably at junon too), sephiroth persecution (ends in the northen crater) and meteor (the rest)

Midgar is expandable because the main villain is Shinra, and you are a group of terrorists trying to deal with the evil corporation, thats the first part.

The second part is a persecution, a travel, thats why you can't stay and expand Kalm, for example, because you dont have a reason to stay there. Same for the rest of the towns.

Finally, the meteor part it requires from you to go to specific places and going arround the world doing huge materia hunting. That could be expandable as well.

What i try to mean is: no, it doesnt have to be +50 disks, it will probably will be 3 or 4 parts at most.

If you ask me, i think Part 2 will end in the northen cave (the game being like FFX, linear but subquests all around, and dont be retarded: FFVII wasnt open world until you get the highwind, it was pretty linear)

ANd part 3 could easily be open world. Add more reactors, more information on the huge materia, even more weapons, etc.

My concern for the remake is they'll screw up the characters and charm. The humor in the PSX original FFs was genuinely well-done (partially due to the simple, expressive animations), and this is something HD Final Fantasy so far hasn't been able to match. I also fear it'll be too serious, and the vibrancy will be sucked out of some areas that should have life. I really want to see Costa Del Sol and the Golden Saucer done well in particular, and Cosmo Canyon and Wutai too. They were amazing in the originals, but we could see even more of them now, and it could be even better.
