This. It lead to a long drought of no new episodes, and when James finally came back and made more he was so burned out from making the movie they were never the same again. Though he did hit a few nuggets of gold like with Atari Sports, but mostly it's been a decline.

When he changed his video format to more of him reacting to shit on camera, and less of him recording and showing why the game he's playing is shit.

It's like a PG version of whatever Red Letter Media is doing this week, except the core group doesn't have that same chemistry Mike/Jay/Rich have that allows a group of schlubs with terrible personalities to flawlessly bounce off each other during discussions and create something entertaining.

If you sit James Rolfe down in front of a camera and have him talk about some old monster movie for an hour I can not only listen, but also be engaged in what he's saying because he's knowledgeable about the subject and actually has a passion for it that borders on the autistic spectrum.
Meanwhile all these fat screen wave schlubs roll out onto camera and get even the most basic of shit wrong to the point that even I, who don't know all that much about the topic, know enough to realize they're clueless.

Yeah the scripts don't feel uniquely James anymore. A thought I often have with these newer episodes, he looks like he's at a job now. Those earlier ones, he seemed like he was having fun. Him and Mike on camera, the scripts he wrote, it all seemed like he was having a good time. Now it's like I'm watching a guy who punches a time card and puts on his work uniform of white button down shirt and black glasses. It's all just going through the motions.

I can't help but feel bad for James.
He is genuinely a good fucking dude, and it seems like every passing year, his life becomed less and less his own, and that fate just keeps shitting on him every chance it gets.

I tried to watch this, but it was awful.
It's not just that it became old or that he got worse... it feels like he's slowly becoming insane.

Its because originally it was a character that hyperbolized James's frustration and disappointment as a kid. Part of the joke to, as he stated, was that you have this guy venting about old video games that no one cares about, as if a review of it 20 years later does any good.
The AVGN was just an experiment and an outlet to be creative about his love of video games. Now its just a character that he has to keep forcing because its what made him popular.

I still watch every AVGN and usually at least somewhat enjoy the newer ones despite the lack of "soul" from the first 100 or so episodes.

This episode was pure shit though. Why Gilbert Gottfried? All of the guests had relevance to whatever game was being reviewed. Even Macaulay Caulken was written into the episode well. There was literally no fucking reason to have Gottfried and he provided absolutely nothing. Almost all of the jokes were forced as fuck and we didn't need to run Fred Fucks into the ground any harder. It's like they decided they could get Gottfried and then just picked whatever shitty shovelware game they could find and barely attempted to make it all work.

I'm usually not as harsh toward AVGN as a lot of people but this is undeniably the shittiest episode to date. I'd rather watch Toxic Avenger over and over than watch this episode again. Completely pointless.

I don't think trying to review superman 64 again isn't a bad idea on it's own, James had dedicated episodes to revisit some of his old games a couple of times in the past, the problem it has mostly to do with the quality of the episode but at least he covered until the end unlike last time.

Black Tiger review felt more as an excuse to feature Gottfried on the show, even the Toxic crusaders episode while bad it made sense and felt it was more for him to finally meet his hero, in general the guest episodes tend to be really bad, with some like Home alone or Sega accesories having some entertaining value outside the usual AVGN style.

The episodes where he talks about consoles are my favorite ones.

The last good episodes were Tiger Games and Atari Sports.
