Before Fate/Stay deathgame bullshit was already played out and then after it there was an explosion of shit deathgame anime.

Fate was never about fighting for grails or about servants, this is what GO gets wrong. What made F/SN good were the themes about morality and self sacrifice vs selfishness. Shirou's development, the exploration of his twisted worldview and his dynamic with Kirei and Archer. The best characters in F/SN are Shirou Emiya, Kirei Kotomine, Kiritsugu and Archer for this reason.
This is also why F/Z is the only good direct spin off of FSN, because it understood what made F/SN good and built upon it.
The 3 main focal points of Fate/Zero are Kiritsugu's morality (and how it contrasts with Shirou's), Kotomine awakening to his true nature (which finally made Gil an interesting character instead of the Saber orbiter/Psychopath, because all he was in UBW was a psycho), and Saber's idea of kingship vs Rider and Gilgamesh's.
Diarmuid Ua Duibhne (Zero Lancer) is handsome and charming and he reminds Arthur of one of her knights, someone she was very close to, she is in a good mood and lad banter feels right. Lancelot (Zero Berserker) is plagiarized from Diarmud's legend. Arthur treats Diarmuid Ua Duibhne different from every other servant because in a way they are not strangers. Lancelot and Diarmuid Ua Duibhne team up to fight Arthur a few pages later so even the people that are maybe not as smart get this spelled out for them.
Every other spinoff of Fate has always made the critical error of focusing on the idea of servants, and they've had some pretty cool ones like Vlad and Karna, but they all lack the thematic linchpin that actual makes the story worth reading.
Apocrypha tried to have a theme of salvation and how it is achieved, but neither Shirou Kotomine nor Sieg were good enough characters to make it work. And the side characters were either forgettable (every master save Sisigou), or wasted potential mostly relegated to pointless fights.

They're both pretty good. Saber's route is the most boring and Sakura is the worst girl despite having the best route. Of course, Tohsaka is the best girl followed by Illya and Rider. Angru is a good guy who didn't deserve all of the bad things he got.

One of few people that seem to actually get it. While the grail wars and servants seem to be the thing that people focus and notice the most, it really isn't that important part of the game, nor is it the best part. It's possibly one of the greatests hooks and narrative devices, but if you take the time to go through it all you should come to the conclusion that the game really is about Shirou, his character and how he relates to the world. While it's really cool to read about everyone's abilities and the fights they undergo, it in the end is a story about the characters in it.
I'd say that Saber should really be pretty high up the character list as her arc is not only to a pretty decent degree tied to Shirou's, but is really great on its own. There really isn't much about Kiritsugu in F/SN to qualify him personally. What is revealed makes him look kind of meh if anything.
I also do kind of have a soft spot for Ilya. While she didn't get the treatement of a proper heroine or antagonist, she's still all around pretty wonderful, though pretty much the whole cast is pretty great, especially the supporting characters.
Nasu didn't write the sex scenes and the likelyhood is that you're refering to a rather amateurish english translation.

Good porn. I don't read VNs or LNs though because they're like the novel equivalent of a JRPG. Bloated to shit, serialized so they can sell product after product, and sold through sex appeal. I'm sure there's actually a good story in there, but I doubt the author of FS/N needed more text than the KJV to tell it, but length=quality to Japanese teenagers apparently 80 PLUSSU HOURS OF CONTENTU I CAN PRAY ALL SUMMER RONG. Fate is the one franchise where I'm perfectly content being a secondary shitter because of the format of the source materia.
