Berserk is weird in this regard.
There’s a single short arc at the very beginning showing Guts as he is “now” – a grizzled demon hunter.
Then for the next like 5 IRL years they did a very long prequel arc called The Golden Age that sets up the overall story. Then it cuts back to the main story of Berserk with that context and continues, which is still going today.
Berserk has 3 anime adaptations. One came out in 1997 and covers the first arc in a single episode then devotes the entire rest of the series to the Golden Age.
The second was a series of 3 movies that was exclusively about the Golden Age. I quite like them, but it really does cut a lot short.
The third is recent, starting in 2016 and is generally a total mess, owing mostly to the awful CG, but it starts at the end of the Golden Age and actually makes the first animated progress into the overall story.
The best part of all of the anime is the OST for the ’97 anime. I’d strongly suggest just reading the manga and maybe listening to the OST in the background or something. Maybe watch the ’97 anime as supplementary material.
