I can see people being bitter about it but only to the extent that everyone who has seen a franchise they like turn into gacha shit is. It's nice to imagine a timeline where gacha was either never invented somehow or (more likely) was immediately recognized as gambling by governments and banned. A lot of good vidya might have happened if the gambling shekel spigot wasn't there to suck on for no effort.
In fairness though vidya adaptions of anime were always rare and usually though not always sucked. So might not have made a difference anyway.

Anime is better then the first two movies IMO. I'd just watch that, though I guess for a rewatch might as well see the movies if you want.
3rd is the sequel and completes the core arc of the story. And yeah lots of people raged about it, but it's very well done anyway and it works.
Not vidya tho.

It doesn't ruin a fine ending at all, it's great. And the original wasn't really an "ending" entirely anyway. I mean, yeah I honestly thought lightning couldn't strike twice and the movie would be total shit because the series wouldn't be followed up well just exploited but I was honestly wrong. It's got a few flaws and I'll admit there have been a few fan visions of a follow up that I'd have loved to see done, but it was still solid.
Though if you haven't watched the series in forever nothing wrong with catching back up first.

The first two movies condense the anime if anything, anime already had a "far future" bit. Personal preference of course, but I think the anime is better paced, and even the mood is better, because when they redrew stuff they let themselves get a little overly flashy with backgrounds for example in the movies (way bigger budget of course) which I actually think doesn't help for once, it blurs the emphasis. It's not like they're bad though, but I'd just rewatch the anime. Meguca's versions still. But it's not like Nanoha for example where the movies were quite a significant shift overall.
After that watch the 3rd. Enjoy the ride.

Thanks. I have watched both the anime and the first two movies when they first came out and I have a vague memory of liking the anime better. I remember a specific scene almost completely missing that reeked of despair; madoka sitting on her bed crying while the situation sinks into her head.
Also glad to hear that the third movie isn't considered bad, just different??
