If a character is written to be the smartest man on the planet he shouldn't be overlooking basic things like motives of actions. Sometimes he's smart enough to come up with crazy schemes and other times he isn't smart enough to realize that his plans could be foiled by the simplest of actions. The problem with his craziness is that he's written to be "haha im krazy but im actually secretly super smart" so half the time his craziness is played off as legit and the other half it's played off as a facade to hide his intelligence. This leads to inconsistent characterization.
Agreed, his core beliefs are not very difficult to comprehend.
