Has controller innovation peaked? The end goal most controllers are aiming for is to make a viable alternative to M+KB. But looking at the past few generations, what else can they do to compete with such accuracy that a mouse provides?
Has controller innovation peaked? The end goal most controllers are aiming for is to make a viable alternative to M+KB...
sony already perfected the layout with the dualshock and the ergonomics with the ds4. all they need to do is fix the battery life and bring back the vita d-pad. the rest of the industry will always be playing catch-up now as far as controllers are concerned.
No until we go back to the Saturn D-pad
Steam Controller would be fucking perfect if they fixed connectivity issue and gave it a second joystick instead of that stupid fucking touchpad.
Takes a while to get use to it, but the steam controller is excellent for FPS.
The touchpads are neat but they don't serve as a do-all be-all for every input emulation you can think of. I tried to imitate thumbsticks with the one on the right and it was just terrible. Without that spring return-to-center feedback, you are just sliding your aim all over the place. The controller is nice and you can do some pretty badass stuff with it, but I wouldn't say it applies to everything. Mouse control emulation in the pad is more feasible though.
This. Been Xbox since it came out, but switched over when the PS4 and Xbox One came out. I cant go back to using Xbox controllers. They make me feel like a fucking mongoloid. Why have your thumbstick off-set? It makes your hands sit weird on the controller.
Also, only thing I would suggest is a better touch pad, or replacing it with something else entirely. If you have to click on a specific spot or swipe the touch pad, it barely responds. Anything other than using it to view the scoreboard ingame, it's useless.
Also, that tiny, shitty speaker it has that every game during the first year insisted on using. Fuck that thing
The D-pad is king for arcade games tbqh
>innovation
>sony uses the same antiquated design for 20 years
Switch Pro is better
I never got the asymmetrical stick placement.
Okay what about a hole in the controller you stick your finger in, and you move your finger to move the camera, then it'll be like you're in the game.
A control with two trackballs.
Has it been done? Would it work?
Switch Pro controller is better in every way. Then the Xbone and 360 controllers come after. Then I'd suggest for someone to not get a controller at all if they didn't want those.
>symmetry
>""antiquated""
Oohoho good one
Still the best.
i own both. the only thing the switch pro is better at is battery life (and even that's still a downgrade from the wii u pro).
the d-pad is garbage, hd rumble is a meme, it's lacking basic features like a headphone jack, and nintendo has the nerve to charge $10 more for it than microsoft and sony do for their controllers.
I love this controller, it's really genius.
>how dare sony stick with what works instead of forcing a retarded new gimmick every generation?
Have fun with your milliseconds of input lag using your shitty arms and plastic mice. Meanwhile I'll be no-scoping you in nanoseconds with mere thoughts.
Thank you based Elon-sama.
mouse has already been surpassed by wiimote and keyboard has always been trash
Friendly reminder that the Wii U Pro is actually peak design.
Top symmetrical sticks should be standard on all consoles. The Switch went asymmetrical because zoomers and casuals are so used to the 360 design.
DS4 is decent but gas terrible battery life and soggy as fuck triggers.
The absolute king of console controllers would be a Wii u Pro with gyro and HD rumble.
Steam controller is nice but it's better left for PC. (I enjoy using it for point and click games)
it works but not as well
>more comfortable controllers are a gimmick

Nigga can’t even ship cars on schedule
Wait for the self driving meme to fizzle out
>The end goal most controllers are aiming for is to make a viable alternative to M+KB
No.
>mouse has already been surpassed by wiimote
Nintentards are evolving.
>The end goal most controllers are aiming for is to make a viable alternative to M+KB.
No, that's just not true. That was the specific goal of the Steam Controller, but no other. Microsoft and Sony have both been making minimal revisions just in order to justify raising the price every generation, Nintendo just keeps shitting out new 'blue ocean' scams, the real innovation is coming entirely from VR controllers.
Because the Xbox layout is objectively better for everything except 2d platformers and fighting games.
You have no arguments I see
play splatoon
>joycons
>more comfortable
only if you have tiny hands.
>34 years since the reboot of the gaming industry
>the last perfect d-pad on a controller was 25 years ago
Holy fucking shit.
Haptic feedback. As nice as controllers are they really don't change based on game. Wouldn't it be nice if I could tell what type of ground I was walking on just by moving the control stick.
controllers are like 40 bucks.
and we fight about them for hours several times a week.
The left control stick is your primary input on the left of the pad.
The face buttons are your primary input on the right.
At least until FPS took over.
I own both the xbox and ps4 controllers, and I like them both almost equally (I prefer the ds4, but I'm pretty sure that's because I've always used sony controllers in my life), but for some reason I just like these threads. I like controllers, like talking about them and like reading people get mad at each other for liking a specific controller kek
still irrelevant only poor people play FPS using controllers
why the fuck are the steam controller's handles inverted? how are you even supposed to hold that
XBone>PS4>Switch Pro>everything else>SC
If they can get the XBone to match the durability of the 360 controller, I will never need another controller as long as I live.
I literally had to buy a console despite owning a decent (at the time) PC to play FPS on a controller simply because I like it more this way.
And oh, I grew up playing on PC, I even was a global elite in CS:GO for quite some time, but then I discovered controllers and how comfy they are.
Eye tracking says hello retard
I have tiny hands and they're still shit. The 360 controller was peak tiny hands comfy.
lol no
I wish I could have tried out some of these newer controllers. The only video game console I was allowed to own was the original Playstation, because after that my parents said they were for the devil. I grew up in a religious family, the kind that had a family band and we sang songs like "Hallelujah to all, for evermore". I had no interest in electronics, because my parents were against technology at the time. But if you think about what they said about the TV, that was their idea of technology. It was just one of their excuses for keeping it in the dark. And all the while I played video games. They loved how addictive they were, and so they gave everything that I had inside themselves their own money and used me in their own way. They just didn't want to lose me because I was gay. I don't know if I want to tell anyone that I'm still dealing with it.
Certainly not the DS4, the triggers are laughable bad and you can't debate that.
The entire controller leans forward and away from you gripped in the hands. Awful
I know these people are delusional. Xbox lost but their controller did not. The triggers wrap your finger perfectly, they even have haptic feedback, I could keep going but its it's perfect
>controller
kys
no it isnt kys
>mixed analog stick and dpad
pfffthahahaha
what do people use the triggers for?
I always switch those to the bumpers in any game that for some reason priorities the triggers;
racing games are literally the only ones where you'd want to use the triggers, but who plays racing games these days anyway
ohhhh look at this cute kid!!! he's so happy his mommy finally got him a PC so he can play CS:GO and become a professional player
will R-handle save the day?
or just never ever actually be sold?
You're holding it wrong.
Xbox 360 > XBone > DualShock 2 > GameCube > SNES > Dreamcast > Sega Genesis > NES
This is a really good list too and I agree with
>If they can get the XBone to match the durability of the 360 controller, I will never need another controller as long as I live.
Bone controllers feel like they're gonna break when I grip em tight. Still absolutely comfy though. Very ergonomic.
>used me in their own way
What?
>The end goal most controllers are aiming for is to make a viable alternative to M+KB
Is it really? Sounds like a very FPS/TPS focused mindset.
>Without that spring return-to-center feedback
yeah, that's entirely useless for movement, i can't put it on words how much it sucks, and the reason why it sucks is also so obvious, i doubt touchpad shills are even gamers, they are more like casual shit trying to shove their own insane ideas on others like a journalist would do
Try 60. Hell switch controllers are like 80 will all the bullshit they stuffed into them.
it looks awful and uncomfortable, but it's probably a nice option for the disabled who want to use a mouse
no you go play that garbage with your meme controller you retard i don't play valve shit
Here's the wave of the future:
Buttons on the back.
Tons of games are moving attacks to the triggers, because players don't want to have to give up movement or camera control in order to attack.
It arguably started with Souls games, but most AAA action games have that layout now.
Sekiro even has heal mapped to UP on the dpad (rather than down, closer to your thumb), and it's clear they expect you to claw grip to hit it during heated battles.
We need more finger-accessible buttons.
it's just that it's literally controllers' only disadvantage at this point
This. If paddles don't take off I'll be very disappointed.
God these were great. Shame they eroded like crazy
The sticks may have symmetrical positions on the controller, but the most common usage of the controller (left thumb on stick, right thumb on buttons) actually makes it asymmetrical in FUNCTION.
So the vita with buttons on the back?
Valve's Steam controller can be set up to emulate twin trackball if there was some reason you wanted to do that. During their testing they found that the bigger the trackball the better, and the trackball emulated by the controller would be too physically large to fit into the controller.
Really the only issue with the Steam controller is the analog stick. It needs either a d-pad or to be made fully ambidextrous.
Though USB-C, an analog headset jack, and maybe another couple of buttons would be nice.
For smash and nothing else.
Almost.
Can't really have a controller that is great for 2D and 3D in a hand friendly space.
2D the Saturn model 2 controller or the PS2 street figher controllers were pretty well perfection.
3D the WiiU Pro controller had insane battery, full features, and prioritized dual stick play, just need a Sega style d-pad for perfection.
Gyro like in splatoon, but with a dedicated button to toggle it on or off
I've never used those paddles, because fuck paying that much for a custom controller, but they look very comfy. I play claw in certain games, but my right hand does get tired faster when I do.
I don't think it's difficult to put those buttons on the back, but if they do, those scuf companies will literally go bankrupt, which honestly looks like the only reason they haven't upgraded the controllers yet (yes, I'm implying scuf could be paying sony and microsoft).
>Sega style d-pad
>perfection
But Sega has the WORST d-pads.
The vita has the best d-pad ever, I agree.
Why couldn't they just release this for switch?
Most current games with gyro allow you to disable it in the settings, and the Steam controller configuration allows you to set a button to either toggle gyro or even to turn it on or off only while a certain button is held down. What you're asking for already exists and you can do it right now.
Do people usually prefer the DS4's d-pad?
I like the position more but you literally cannot feel the buttons when one of them is already pressed. Imo the xbox's one is better, but its position is not comfortable at all. I have no issue with the DS4's thumbsticks position, but for some reason the xbox's d-pad just gets uncomfortable pretty fast.
Most of the cheap 3rd pary xbone xontrollers I've seen are starting to add them now.
>Most current games with gyro
name one game on pc with gyro;
ive literally never used it despite having owned a ds4 for many years
Why the fuck would a game with native mouse input use gyro. The whole benefit of using gyro equipped controllers on PC is that you can get close to mouse tier input accuracy without using a mouse
which is stupid but whatever some people are dumb
It's hard to say. All great innovations are of things that seem second nature and you can't believe someone else hasn't come up with first.
When using dual joystick controls, you could argue that having to use the face buttons isn't convenient and many games have been developed where the primary actions are on the shoulder buttons and triggers, but unless we suddenly evolve in a way where we start using our two outermost fingers on each hand more efficiently, I don't see the controller design changing.
It could potentially happen though. Thumb dexterity wasn't really a thing prior to mobile phones, but now we have all gotten used to using that finger with ease, so who knows...
Right now, my favorite controller is the Switch Pro. Feels great, good button layout and 40 hours of battery life. Not sure why anyone want to play the Switch handheld with the vastly inferior joycon when the pro controller is available...
>name one game on pc with gyro
Literally every game on Steam and even non-Steam games loaded through Steam if you use the Steam controller configuration with your DS4 to configure gyro controls.
It's good for games where you need analog character movement and only have to aim sometimes. For example, MGSV plays better on a controller for everything except aiming your gun, which is something that you don't do constantly in that game. Being able to get more precise aiming controls without sacrificing the analog character movement or swapping your hand between controller and mouse is a fantastic feature.
No, it’s not a game with gyro, it’s a spend an hour setting it up to just give up because why would you learn something that’s not used by game devs at all;
If there’s a game specifically made with gyro controls in mind, I’d try it out sure, but other than that I’m fine using sticks
I doubt they'll every be a perfect controller as long as secondary options continue to exist.
I'm certainly the minority but I think the wiimote/nunchuk and joycons are on the right track
>hour
a minute tops on PC, default settings on the switch.
>spend an hour setting it up
Just download someone else's configuration from the internet through Steam's built-in configuration downloading system.
