go with a modpack that has buildcraft, industrial craft and galacticcraft in it. there are plenty on modpacks like FeedTheBeast launcher or ATLauncher.

Does anyone know of a mod (or mods, I don't care) that automates mining? I know there are many of them, but I'm trying to find one that can be used in Survival mode from the start of the game. Many autominer recipes use diamond, for some reason, and I want one that can be made with more common materials even if its shit.

Try thaumcraft for a pretty fun and complete mod.
If you have a BIG colputer, try the FTB modpack, it's absolutely massive but it can be very fun. (Requires two screens cause you'll constantly be using google)
