You can't hands-off fights around your level. All of the bait webms and videos of people auto-attacking things to death in this series come from people who are 20-40 levels higher than what they're fighting in areas of the game that they've already been to 50 hours ago, but with the levels cropped or blurred out.
A lot of the boss fights in the series in particular are more challenging than nearly any turnbased JRPG.
