For the most part you're going to be working with shaders and post processing to get these kinds of effects. More specifically, Depth of Field (the blurring of objects out of focus) some sort of outlining for objects, and soft shadows. You could attempt to accomplish the last one with subsurface scattering, but to be honest that's still very much tech demo territory.
