There is a lot. The main plot is that the first stage is actually the penultimate stage but everyone is dead except for a small selection of warriors. You cant kill the boss and the following stages is about going back in time to save your allies and become string enough to replay the beginning stage with much stronger weapons.

Do the tutorials quests. Speak to Elder Kai there are like 12 or 13 to get the basic.
