In terms of interesting level design and movement quake 1 us objectively superior, 2 is slow and terribly boring, not to mention all the back tracking objectives. They arent terrible except for the ground zero expansion pack, which is literally the worst FPS ever released

2 is just to incredibly janky.
Weird levels, weird movement, slow as fuck weapon switching which kills the flow. It just feels off.
It has some nice weapons though. The rail gun and the super shotty fucking rule. And the music's great.
But other than that Quake 1 is better in every single way

The SP in Quake 1 is much better, Quake 2 had way too much backtracking and just overall get slower since the maps were much larger. Can’t comment on the MP of either since I only played Quake 2 MP for a very short window of time.

There's nothing wrong with Quake 2 but on the other hand there doesn't feel like there's anything special about it

Quake 1 is the only Quake game I acknowledge. The others are simply excessively generic space shooters about pointing plasma guns at space aliens in high tech facilities and spaceships which was better done in Unreal and Halo.
Quake is suppose to be about Lovecraftian horror without excessive tentacles and blowing up armored knights in a Gothic castle by using a repeating rocket launcher.
Send in the Japanese arsonists to bring about the Rebirth of the Gods at Bethesda and ID HQ. Only through rebirth after destruction can Quake be saved.
