DQ 8: This one is tough. The 3ds version has no random encounters, but has midi music. The Ps2 has random encounters, but orchestrated music. It depends on what you value more, honestly. For me, the music is so sweeping and beautiful that entire feel of the game changes without it, and I can't imagine the game being as impactful without it, however the 3ds version adds so many new features (like new party members), quests, and so on that it's hard to ignore.

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, the 3ds with an orchestra homebrew patch is the definitive version.

DQ 9: only every came out on DS

DQ 10: unless you're fluent in Japanese, skip

DQ 11: Switch

Extra stuff is fine for first timers but not worth playing it again for, or even buying a console for.

If a person hasn't played it, and a new version with a shit ton of new features is coming out, and they have access to both a ps4 and a switch, I would have a hard time recommending the less feature complete version because, honestly, it would be a ripoff.

I made the mistake of buying the Android versions and not hating them, don't do that. But DO emulate Dragon Quest Monsters for the PS1.

Avoid 1 and 2. They suck ass.
Play 3 on the NES preferably with a bugfix patch. 3 on the GBC is crunched and the music is really bad. There is a translation hack for 3 on the SNES but it is much harder than the original NES game.
Play IV on NES or DS, DS has loads more dialogue and pointless shit if you don't like that.
V on the SNES is ugly as hell, just play it on DS. Same for VI.

The Switch adds a lot of content; if you're playing it for the first time you would definitely want to play the Switch version and a lot of people are going to double dip for the extras Switch brings.
Yes, the PC version is acceptable because you can mod in the orchestrated music. I'd say the only version you should really avoid is the PS4 version, as it has none of the Switch extras and you're stuck with the midi music.

Toriyama has a lot of overlap in his faces but he does a good job of making all the major characters in each individual product he works on stand out. All the Dragon Quest IV characters are super distinctive in the game itself, even if you can draw overlap with Yamcha or North Kai on some of them.

The guys made literally thousands of characters and is specifically hired to emulate the types of designs that made Dragon Ball popular, he's honestly better than most manga artists at sameface.

I feel as though Toyotaro's main problem when it comes to drawing DBS is how he tries to draw it as though he was drawing the anime and not the manga. So a lot of Toriyama's subtle shading usages are downright missing in DBS.
Then again, even modern Toriyama's art has that same problem, so it could just be Toriyama told Toyotaro to follow that line of thinking.
