Characters are not real people. They are part of a story. They SERVE the story. If a character's character isn't serving the story it needs to be fixed.

The problem with gay characters in most/all videogame media is that their homosexuality is incidental to the story. It's not about the portrayal of the homosexuality - straight acting gays and fag acting gays can both be great and appreciated characters - it is about the irrelevancy of the homosexuality.

characters and stories go hand in hand, making characters just to serve a story makes for dry characters that are defined by actions rather than actual character (western games tend to do this a lot - every bethesda game really) while making a story around characters lead to frivolous stories that don't go anywhere (the entire japanese light novel genre).
The real solution to dry is to have the characters actually interact, and the solution to a frivolous story is to have that interaction be meaningful/thought provoking.
To give an example - everyone would prefer to watch the TF2 meet the team videos over the overwatch character videos for entertainment, because when the characters interact with eachother in those videos, they apply their character. Even the very first one, with heavy monologuing, reveals something unique to heavy - you can tell he's boistrous, he's a simple guy, and he likes his weapon. Compare this to Widowmaker's scenes in the videos that feature her, which barely have any lines for her. She uses a zoomed in rifle, yet you don't really get into the way she reacts to everyday situations nearly the same way that you can from meet the sniper.

If you really wanted to do the "right" thing then you would look at the percentage of every single minority group then through a command economy force game developers to include certain characters of certain ethnicities so there is a perfect proportion of each minority to be represented form each country. Since ethnic group percentages change every year you would also have to account for that too (i.e America is 53% white, 36% mestizo, 6%, mixed, etc so you would have to make sure that 53% of all games in 2019 America have a white protagonist, 36% have a meztiso protagonist, and so on. You would also have to ensure the number of NPCs fit that too)

A character being gay is like a character having a foot fetish. It's an unnecessary detail that has little reason to be included, so by default people will wonder why that detail was included. Arcade Gannon doesn't really talk much about his sexuality, sure. But there are character in New Vegas like Boone and Cass who go on and on about their relationships. Boone's entire character arc revolved around him getting revenge for his dead wife and coming to terms with her being gone and Cass goes on and on about the relationships she's had. If Arcade was involved with either of these (his quest involved lamenting over his dead husband, he discusses all the men he's slept with) then everyone would complain about how he's "too gay". But because they are straight characters no one gives a shit

It is a blatant double standard and the reactions to New Vegas' characters is a perfect demonstration of the Gay Paradox

If he turned into an obnoxious SJW and continued acting violently in debates with him then I'd probably kick him out of the house and do everything in my power to remove him from public records
