The perfect game for me would be Persona 2 but with completely overhauled combat and dungeon design. Same with 1, though I prefer 2's characters. The PSP remakes were such wasted potential. I'd say Atlus should try again but they might turn into Persona 3/4/5 reskins.

I haven't played the PS1 versions but from my understanding most of the changes were slight tweaks. The most noticeable differences are the changed (butchered) OST in P1 and the changed art in P2.

Can you discard personas in the velvet room yet?
Can you see which personas you already have in your compendium from the fusion menu?
Can you do a reverse search on personas in your compendium to figure out how to remake it using other personas you own? They're useless even as fusion material when they have at a maximum 2 moves when you find them in a dungeon.
I really like collecting personas, but they really discourage having more than a handful of persona that matter. You can't even max the compendium without doing NG+ mode since like pokemon the story basically ends at the midrange of levels and anything further is just retreading dungeons to grind levels.
I ran out of money at the end of P3 after hoarding well over 1M yen making 4 of the max social link fusions.
I ran out of money regularly in P4 making fusions. Never even bought anything but personas from the compendium and the Tanaka weekly offer.

I already heard in P2 you wouldn't even bother fusing what wasn't already given to you, so I hope that P5 and future Persona games can address some of these serious QoL issues.

Persona 5 was so bad it killed the franchise for me. I'm a but hopeful now that Hashino is no longer working on them, but expect Re;Fantasy to be dire. His writing is absolutely terrible and will ruin every subsequent game he makes.

Cautiously optimistic for Re:Fantasy

SP was never an issue in boss battles when you just walk right to each level guardian without any other encounters.
Full moon bosses guaranteed full hp & sp at the battle start.
She had a much higher SP pool, so Aegis would always be more starved for SP using her party buffing spells than Yukari would be spamming Garudyne and the occasional diarahan (never was able to get her to use mediarahan or recarm spells despite her knowing both).
She's hot so she is worth keeping around, much like Mitsuru. Toy bow + that skimpy red bikini was a staple of Tartarus, though the black one on Mitsuru was much more lewd like some dominatrix getup.
Let's be real though. The male alternatives were pitiful. Junpei was useless 90% of the game. Akihiko is a bro, but has similar problems as Aegis using up his small sp pool too fast. He also had the same damage types I happened to be using, unlike garu which is basically for party members only. Think Titania was the only persona I ever made with garu skills (and a Thor who hilariously had a skill change from maziodyne to magarudyne); just not a good element.
Ken is a little shit far worse than Yukari at her lowest and doesn't even have useful moves.
Shinjiro was cool he basically carried me through the one boss fight he was around, but RIP.
Koromaru was cute, but fire was not so useful and he really had no support skills to speak of.
The best squad was Yukari (strong heals, revive if you have that tactics rng), Aegis (party buffs are so OP the enemy wastes half his turns removing them.), and Mitsuru (because who else are you going to take?).

Which is fine if you don't plan on using Mitsuru for direct damage, the way she's stat weighted. Sadly there's no tactic that says "use direct damage instead of spamming your one shitty spell that never works" if you do.

3 is my favorite but I enjoyed 4 and 5 as well.

P2 and P5 are my overall favorites, so I don't mind the attention that the latter is receiving. It can't be worse than eight years of P4 for me.

2's PSP remake is pretty good. Only censorship is removing the swastika (for the iron cross instead) and giving The Fuhrer sunglasses and a trenchcoat. Dub is whatever, but you can select between the remixed tracks or the original music pretty easily. The battle system also saw a few small quality of life updates, but still stays true to the original.
