Ultimate is so close to being great but there's so many minor things that get in the way, that won't ever be fixed, like the input lag, the buffer, shitty online, generally poor balancing decisions, and half of the new characters are just terribly designed.
I really hope that some day it can get the Project M treatment, not to make it play like Melee, but to fix all the issues that get in the way. So many characters could use a nice fix, or reworking a little/entirely, and we all know Sakurai won't even do it.

Rayman is not that popular. His games are good but he doesn’t deserve to be in just because he’s a cartoon platformer mascot.

He was popular enough to be a trophy in the last game and a spirit in this one as well as a cameo on Battlefield.

The balance in the release version of the game is definitely the best they've had so far, for sure, but it left a lot of room for improvement. Some characters have also benefited in the patch notes up till now, but I can't think of anyone who really went from being shit to being more than mediocre.
It shouldn't be hard to see which characters have the short end of the stick, yet instead of fixing up the bottom of the pile, they slapped many of the top tiers with nerfs and left it at that. I'm not a 'no nerfs ever' kind of guy, but I really would rather see more characters getting significant improvements beyond minor shit like extra knockback on one move. In general it seems like they're reluctant to make many (if at all) changes to how any moves actually work, and not just adjust attributes.
Kirby's inhale is useless compared to Dedede's despite it being his signature move, and the way it works with projectiles makes it functionally useless even as a defense against projectiles. They could fix it very easily but they've barely touched Kirby at all. Isabelle's lloid mine is very easy to counterplay, you can just destroy it, despite it being weaker and easier to see than Snake's c4. Robin's arcfire is worse than PK Fire, yet it has limits to how many times you can use and it won't even recharge until you're done using all charges.
If this was PM, these moves could get reworked to make them more viable, but in Ultimate they'll either go untouched or get a small change like the speed of the lloid rocket. Yes, now most character can't just run over it, but the main fault is still there.
Hell, PM would give characters entirely new moves between patches to cover their drawbacks. Official Smash would never even dream of that.

Unfortunately we can't expect that kind of love and attention to detail from a game as big as Smash anymore. 64 and Melee were very much products of their time and no big company will ever put in that much into their games anymore.

PM modding is alive and well. I suggest you look into P+ and Smash Bros. CE. There are all sorts of cool shit being worked on with a lot of effort and polish. Hell, we just got a well-made Road released recently. Geno is a character I see talked about here all the time and he's got a great mod that even incorporates timed hits from SMRPG as a mechanic for most of his moveset.

P+ is what I was thinking about when comparing them, the new slide kick that Kirby got is something that should really be a staple of his moveset (like what use does grounded stone even have? Banjo is quite limited as a platformer given that most of the kit for Banjo is either situational or barely impact his movement abilities, this combined with the fact that you pretty much can defeat every enemy in the game decreases the difficulty, so in the end approaches to most situations end up being more of using the correct move rather than any skill in particular at difference of Mario where the freedom of movement allows Mario to tackle any situation in a multitude of manners.Plus part of what makes SM64 great is that while the level boots you out, the levels are designed around this limitation.

How fucking wrong you are. First, MP gain is based upon the attack. A smash, for example, can net you 15 MP. Jabs certainly less. He also gets one a second, and for basic play he has infinite MP as it takes a lot of stupid play to sap yourself entirely,

Second, while a lot of his moves do have either startup or ending (bair startup, fsmash ending), they only really have one or the other and those moves also are very active. His bair is insanely good and his fair isn't bad to throw out either. Dtilt is a great poke. Dsmash is better that usmash which is pretty situational. Dthrow can lead to low % combos. Dair is basically a sex kick that spikes at the start. Basic play seems to be centered around neutral B full charge, side B charge 2, down B buffs when hit away. He can make it back from pretty far and if they recover low you can lay whoosh so they have to go through it.

I'm unsure where he falls right now in viability but he can get some stupidly low % KOs without relying on just a hard read fsmash. He also has zero want or need to ever approach, which is more than pretty much all of the cast. He seriously has no reason to ever be the aggressor, so suddenly moves like fair become better as they have pretty decent reach. He shits damage. He just struggles to approach a bit and I could see him really struggling versus Olimar

I disagree entirely. If you are going to be using lots of B moves you're going to put yourself into a shit position with basically no MP and nothing to show for it. His stuff is better used for actual callouts. Charge shot threatens well offstage and you can actually dthrow charge shot at 0% against certain characters for 44%. 80~ish you can bthrow and fire it off to force them to burn either airdodge or jump and follow up accordingly. It also kills really early if you tag. Hero can box well enough to use the other tools fine... he just isn't going to push in through other characters' shit and doesn't need to. Take dtilt. If you dtilt a shield you then get free callout with fair, retreating nair which is safe, grab attempt, etc. It serves his kit well.

Playing him like Robin is a mistake because he can box way, way better than Robin and he controls space way worse since his spells do not linger. Compare their nairs alone.

I do not, but you are correct. Dthrow is definitely his best throw. Doesn't really have a kill one, though I think uthrow kills the soonest in the upper 100s a la Marth. I haven't checked but possibly at lower %s bthrow can be used like charizard's; it has a similar angle. Dthrow at 0% is actually pretty interesting. You can do a lot of combos/frametraps.

I recommend trying to fit in level 2 side B and consider it against anyone who even thinks about extending. 25% on something with that much range. It's silly.

The inherent design of ryu and ken will always make them awful in smash. No amount of twitter combos will change that.

There was a game-wide fix this patch to the stall-and-fall type moves, like Simon's dair, bowser's, etc. Before when you got launched and tried to dair, they would float/fall really slowly in the air for some reason, and Ridley's would do this too. Now they fixed that jank, and although it's not listed in the patch notes Ridley's dair is also fixed so that might be what you're feeling

I don't like the game either because it feels atrociously clunky and unresponsive; like there's always a long delay before what i actually input and what my character does (or doesn't do at all; sometimes they just stay there waiting to get punched).

I liked Smash 4's controls best; It wasn't a perfect game by any means and Ultimate is indeed the most balanced --- but between having 4 or 5 OP characters that kicks everybody's ass; and having a ton of somewhat balanced characters that doesn't do anything you tell them to... the former may be best.
