This game is unbelievably incredible. They did such an amazing job of making the world feel alive and real. Nearly every character in the game, even the most minor unimportant NPCs, have at least 5-6 lines of dialogue depending on what is happening in the game when you talk to them.
The single most impressive thing to me was that after I had beaten the final boss and loaded the save, I went back to the final boss room. There was absolutely no reason for the player to do that. The boss was defeated, the room was empty. But I wasted 10 minutes walking there and goombella actually had a unique line of dialogue for the room. They didn't have to do that. 99.9% of players would never see that, and that goes for most of the dialogue in the game. They put so much love and attention to detail in this game and it's sad to me how little attention that gets.

Trying to do a level 1 run. So far its good. The 3 BP I have lets me do 12~ damage per partner hit. Chapter twos boss was dead in 3 turns

it's okay but backtracking kills it. always drop the game when general white comes up because it's not even worth it

There is literally nothing wrong with backtracking

yes there is. there is no need for the player to retread the same ground they just covered just to progress. imagine if this were a 2D game and it just had you play the same level twice but the second time was backwards.

>there is no need for the player to retread the same ground they just covered just to progress
You must hate a fuck ton of genres then

A 2d Mario game is primarily about the gameplay while Paper Mario is primarily about the characters and the world. The backtracking is not a bad thinh because each time you go back the characters have new dialogue. That's why the backtracking is in the game in the first place, so you keep going back and talking to characters.

name 5 games that have as much and as lazy backtracking as ttyd

look man I love this game, but the doopliss section sans the boss fight and general white are annoying, it's not as bad as chapter 2 but it's a flaw

oh fuck off. half of the time you're backtracking through areas that don't even have any characters to talk to. even then, oh yeah walking back and forth for 5 minutes is worth seeing one character change what he's saying.
64 did this shit way better but you guys will never accept it

Loaded question. Ignored

fuck I forgot, the amount of times you have to go through hooktail's castle, one for that dumb hide and seek koopa, one to get the badge/ms mowz, and again for the up arrow for merlon

Does anyone else really love looking at the map? Every location other than Petal Meadows looks unique but at the same time, they're nondescript enough to get your imagination going on what lies ahead of you. I'll never forget looking at Twilight Town on the map expecting it to be a peaceful woodland level and then experiencing the shock of entering such a dark and gloomy village.

Attached: paperm-tyd-map.jpg (960x720, 992K)

insane that the same studio that made this makes fire emblem

Like fuck you do. The only one you have to do is the up arrow. Me mouz is a shitty partner never worth using and the hide and seek koopa is just for a minigame.

There hasn't been a JRPG before or since with combat as fun

Fucking RIP Paper Mario

Attached: 1388278548852.gif (500x378, 630K)

How is it insane? Three Houses is one of the best games I've played recently. The FE hate needs to stop already.

pretty sure the up arrow quest is optional as well

Its the quest to ultra upgrade your partners. You definitely don't need it at all because the game is so easy but there's at least a reason to do it unlike a weak ass partner and a minigame.

>Intelligent Systems outsources majority of work to Koei Tecmo
>game turns out to be better than any IS-made Fire Emblem in over a decade
really activates my almonds

Attached: 1499465049124.jpg (480x480, 25K)

>but there's at least a reason to do it
>not wanting all the partners
>not wanting to have an easy minigame to farm tokens so you can get cake mix for good items thanks to zess t
you'd at least have an argument if the optional partner was flurrie instead of mowz but damn

Three Houses is better than Warriors. Try again.

agreed. it's a masterpiece. gameplay, story, characters, music is all spot-on. not a single dull moment in this game.

it's not that bad. there's only 2 instances of backtracking in this game and they don't even account for a tenth of the gameplay time.

It's really cool that lady bow shows up after you've beaten the game. My jaw dropped when I saw her in poshley heights. She was the only well designed partner from the first game.

I'm talking about Three Houses retard. Intelligent Systems literally outsourced most of the game's development to the Nobunaga's Ambition team at KT.

Fire Emblem > Babby's first RPG with autistic OCs

I like mowz design but her moves all suck and she has no real dialogue after you pick her up, the fun part about her was when she would pop up in each area and say something, as a partner she has no value. Outside of puzzles I think most people will end up falling back on Vivian or bobbery since bobbery has godly AoE and Vivian has pretty good AoE with defensive options.

>Outside of puzzles I think most people will end up falling back on Vivian or bobbery since bobbery has godly AoE and Vivian has pretty good AoE with defensive options.
can't argue with that, but mowz is basically lady bow in combat and still more useful then flurrie

>but mowz is basically lady bow in combat
scratch that stupid comment bow was basically split into two, mowz with the slap and vivian with the useful hide ability

I LIKE BOGGLY WOODS OK.
I THINK IT HAS A COZY, ESOTERIC FEEL. LIKE A FAMILIAR PLACE COVERED BY UNTOUCHED FALLEN SNOW.

Attached: boggly_woods_by_feywild15_d5kguah-fullview.jpg (900x675, 143K)

>The single most impressive thing to me was that after I had beaten the final boss and loaded the save, I went back to the final boss room. There was absolutely no reason for the player to do that.
Are you playing for the first time? Because you'll actually be finding a reason to go back there again soon.

>2 instances of backtracking
>boggly woods
>twilight town
>island
>general white
Haven't played in a good while but i remember all of these being backtracking heavy

A proper TTYD successor would be a massive fucking success (upwards of 10 million sales) and Nintendo is retarded for not realizing that. It's one of the last "never ever"s of Ninty game announcements; people have been clamoring for years after Sticker Star/Color Splash literally shit on fans hopes and buried the franchise dead. And it'd be a well known IP on a hugely successful console.

Hopefully they come to their senses soon.

Attached: 1563547081071.jpg (472x744, 157K)

i wish they just dropped the little bug side story completely and designed the tree around something else

Actually now that I think about it, I think the "outside of puzzles" part is why mowz feels so insignificant. All the other partners, no matter how useless they are in combat are still used for puzzles (goombella to get hints for them). They end up feeling useful and you end up appreciating them because of it. Maybe that's why they made Vivian and Bobbery so overpowered too, because they dont have as much puzzle utility and would otherwise feel like an after thought. Just some speculation.

I played the game back when I was like 13 but I was still a stupid kid with no attention span so I didn't do any of the side quests or really explore for secrets.

mowz rules, sexy stilettos + heart tail and she sniff sniffs treasure panels

I think the next paper Mario will be TTYD style, since Nintendo is pandering to the GameCube nostalgia a lot lately. I don't think IS has the talent anymore to make a game that good though.

maybe vivian but bobbery was the solution to all of the cracks in various walls that you saw before

reminder that PM64 and Super are both superior to TTYD

Nah. Super is mediocre, and PM64's only perk over TTYD is its level design.

absolute retard. i seriously hate sharing a board with people like you

I started this for the first time a few months ago and forgot should I play this?

Honestly I feel the comparisons between 64 and TTYD are just stupid. While having a lot of aesthetic and gameplay similarities the games aim for very different sorts of experiences so they can't be compared. TTYD is aiming to make a living, breathing world with dynamic characters who feel real. 64 is a much more simple straight forward romp. It's like trying to compare banjo kazooie to banjo tooie.

am i actually talking to a retard here or what?

It could be a lot worse, but yes, backtracking is never fun.

Who the fuck actually likes the Color Splash artstyle? It looks like shit
>DUDE PAPER LMAO

Attached: color splash vs ttyd.jpg (2000x563, 393K)

you can thank ttyd for starting this shit. 64 was just "hey the characters are thin". ttyd was the one that went ahead and starting making all the cardboard and paper jokes

Was there any acknowledgement that they were paper besides the curses? I dont remember any.

>white outline
into the garbage

The light jokes were fine in TTYD because they were kept to a minimum; they didn't base the entire humor around "dude paper LMAO" like CS.

I can't even recall TTYD outright using cardboard as a design crutch like CS. Even if it did, the art design is so fucking great it doesn't matter.

Paper Mario 64 > Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga > Paper Mario TTYD > Super Mario RPG

I still like Super Mario RPG though.

i'm fairly certain there were a few jokes about characters being "paper"-thin and what not but no, i don't think it was ever really acknowledged outside of that

>SMRPG below the paper games
fuck off

God I wish any Mario game had anything close to this worldbuilding. I loved seeing all those little towns made up of species that are usually only depicted as enemies.

Attached: Herbert.jpg (295x199, 14K)

i still think SMRPG isnt as good as the papers
its too much final fantasy without being more of its own thing like how paper mario is and its combat system

i hope miyamoto joins iwata

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Attached: Sleeping cracker.png (400x311, 89K)

FUCK YOU.
seriously though, who the hell thought this was a good idea? you know, it might've been fine if it was a one-time thing but no, even when you know he's there, you still have to go on a goose chase

Attached: yoshis meet.jpg (332x492, 68K)

Well if you just look at the combat, PMTTYD had the real time reaction for moves in combat that made it 100% times more enjoyable I understand that Super Mario RPG also had this but it didn't feel nearly as satisfying.

Personally I think PMTTYD is the perfected recipe of Mario RPG.

Mario & Luigi doesn't belong on that list, they are fun games but the stories are mediocre and the personality isn't as great as the Paper Games

It strikes me as a meta joke that got out of hand

What reason are you talking about? Been a while since I played but I can't for the life of me remember having to go back there.

Attached: Pondering plumber.png (206x236, 4K)

>my friend tells me you get DK as a partner in "that jungle"
>it's just a spooky town with no DK

Fuck you, Xavier. Double fuck you for telling me Raichu was in Melee if you play a full 99min match

>personality isn't as great as paper games
someone has never played SS

Get rid of the white lines and the choppy animation, then I would consider CS's artstyle

by paper games I refer to the only 2 games in the franchise 64 and TTYD.

Sticker Star was the biggest disappointment I've ever played from Nintendo. Now that I think of it all Nintendo games that have SS as initials are the worst in the franchise.
>Skyward Sword
>Sword and Shield
>Sticker Star
I think Nintendo needs to stop using S alliteration.

soul silver

KT is credited because they used the warriors engine.

Wow, so he's made a few mistakes in his life. Doesn't mean we bring out the guillotine.

Superstar Saga

well there is always an outlier. you could argue that because Soul Silver and Heart Gold came out together their initials are SSHG or HGSS seeing as thats how the Sword and Shield initials were made.

Skyward Sword is better than Zelda 1. Zelda 1 be like "bomb this one square wall section out of the 90 here, then pay rupees for the door"

Does anyone else love cooking in this game? I just like the idea of being able to combine items into a useful item for later, saving inventory space and turns in battle. Zelda and Terraria both scratched this itch with the tinkerer's workshop and being able to combine foods for better effects. There's just something magical about the whole ordeal.

>when you cook your first yummy meal and get that sweet 20/20 health/flower point regain

Attached: 4h2pdxwa3ftz.gif (500x640, 2.97M)

thats one of the fun things about Zelda 1, there isn't anything fun about Skyward Sword.
>Fi hold your hand literally everywhere
>Gameplay is janky as hell
>Story single-handedly ruined later Zelda plots
>Game is really linear with only 4 areas that you constantly revisit.
in conclusion, games bad

>tfw the flash tier animation and tweening kills my immersion
I liked the art style of the first game better.

Fuck off weeb faggot, keep jerking off to your dumb overdone waifushit. Fire emblem is the reason we don't get an actual good game like a proper paper Mario sequel.

THIS.

Lads dont forget to sign the petition for the HD remaster to get nintendo to wake the fuck up.

What a nice name.

I adore TTYD, but CS was better for me. Absolute brilliant level design and art direction.

Skyward Sword is the best 3D Zelda game. Get a better taste, nigger.

Attached: PMCS.jpg (2370x4000, 3.42M)

>CS is better
>Skyward Sword is the best 3D Zelda game
and your telling me to get better taste

Attached: U pad manual.jpg (2000x2102, 2.3M)

64 had a lot of good visual gags based on the characters being made of paper, it wasn't completely innocent of the "dude paper" thing.

Attached: U pad manual 2.jpg (2000x1837, 2M)

Thousand year backtrack

Sorry dude, it's just, you're so stupidly naïve.

>believing your resident "mew under the truck" friend

Attached: 1564562972908.png (475x200, 115K)

>we will never get a paper mario game with donkey kong as a partner
didnt know i wanted this until now

south park stick of truth is the closest we are going to get to a proper paper mario sequel. There is a guy from here creating a game about paper bugs so that could also be cool.

>he didn’t unlocked DK

Sticker Star has godly music, and I can see what they were trying with the gameplay. If you don’t do a danger run 64 and TTYD are ridicously easy, and I like it trying to be an RPG after SPM which was more plot driven with some annoying platforming here and there

First one was better

The first one was better though?

what makes pm64 better

This is such a tired take. The General White quest is a bit of a pain but it takes all of, what, 10 minutes at most? And you can grab some items for cooking from the various places you visit and maybe explore new parts of the underground in the process of doing it.
"TTYD is bad because backtracking" is practically just a meme at this point, it almost seems like people just repeat it for the sake of either shitposting or trying to fit in somehow.

better gaem

>is practically just a meme at this point, it almost seems like people just repeat it for the sake of either shitposting or trying to fit in somehow.
Or maybe it just really killled the momentum for them.
There's a lot of backtracking in this game thats unnecessary

The story was much better and wasn't nearly as cutscene reliant as TTYD
Different places where the star spirits were had a lot more variety
The boss variety was much better too
TTYD strayed too far from being a "Mario" game in my opinion because of its world building and NPCs, it felt like it was trying to throw Mario into an entirely different game but still keeping nods to the original Mario series
I could say more but it's 5AM and I can't be assed to

CARDBOARD LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

What would you add in a TTYD remaster/remake, Yea Forums?
>postgame Glitz Pit with stronger enemies and Prince Mush as a bonus boss
>Shadow Sirens/Doopliss fight restored to Chapter 6, Smorg's origins explained
>when you're supposed to fight the Shadow Sirens in Chapter 8, Jr. Troopa casually beats them in reference to him doing the same to the Koopa Bros in PM64, and then you have a surprise fight with him

>Absolute brilliant level design and art direction
And nothing else, hell the art direction isn't even that good. The choppy character movements and white outlines look like shit

I also like looking through the cookbook/recipes

Agreed

Agree with the first two points. Jr. Troopa should be optional or an added boss, it shouldn't replace the Shadow Sirens fight since their battle theme is so fucking good and it's a fun fight. Also,

>Hard mode/NG+
>Never going to happen but a boss rush would be fun, maybe a harder pit?
>Revamp the backtracking segments so that the contrarians can finally stfu
>Move Power Bounce to the endgame, it's ridiculous that you get the best attack in the game during the first two hours
>Some balance adjustments and additional party banter would be nice but not necessary
>Skippable cutscenes (fuck you, Shadow Queen)

I don’t care how autistic this is, I miss when these games actually gave life to the whole series’ characters and settings

Attached: 61181FA3-24A1-4470-B42D-AAB87DDC7A20.jpg (1166x685, 139K)

>Move Power Bounce to the endgame, it's ridiculous that you get the best attack in the game during the first two hours
I think they should make it so one Power Bounce badge caps you at 3 hits, and each additional one you stack gives you another hit at the cost of 1 or 2 more FP (as well as the BP to equip it)
That way you could still get it early without it breaking the game, and then get scale it up as you progress.

Koopa Jr's history mode, similar to what they did in superstar saga remake

This game is probably in my top 3, but I just get bitter when I think about it, knowing that we may never get anything as good as it again.
I was too much of a brainlet to do the cooking, I’ve never had the patience to do it in any game really

Imagine the new golden age that Nintendo will go through once their senior designers all retire and nobody has to put up with their autism anymore.

Miyamoto's death has gotta be the biggest double-edged sword in the industry
On one hand it will be a huge loss, on the other maybe we'll get some Mario games with a story

Actually a good idea. Stacking multiple badges should in all cases cost more BP/FP (mainly to nerf Danger Mario/stacking Power Plus), since BP is way too good to pick when leveling as is. Also, remove HP and FP Plus.

Mario and luigi games come close.

Personally I think they should just get rid of random badge drops from enemies and unlimited badges of any kind and stick to strictly-defined limits on how many of each are available.
I'm not sure about cutting HP/FP plus since I like the option of having a little bit of leeway to change your build on the fly, but it is true that having one around essentially makes upgrading BP flat out better than the corresponding stat. Maybe nerf them to 3 HP/FP each? Would make picking BP more versatile but less efficient overall. Dunno how often just 2 HP would be likely to matter though.
