Additionally a large part of it was to be anti competitive. If they secure an early lead and then make their hardware retarded to develop on, they can effectively lock out competition by making it far more difficult to port games around.
Luckily Microsofts big push with Xbox and ultimately winning with 360 particularly at the beginning is a big reason hardware today isn't nonsense and most 3rd party games are on many platforms.
