I think 2 is actually quite ok in singleplayer (unfortunately never played the mp) and 4 is kinda bad but has a fun scene in it.

Well obviously a decently sized chuck of the playerbase (including pro players) are going to play the one that's at Quakecon (assuming they don't just move on to another game e.g. cypher or cooller, I can't remember).

On top of that, any new player considering trying out Quake is usually going to have to choose between Quake Live and Quake Champions. Considering one's free with shiny graphics and the other is 10$ (which is a travesty) and a worse version of a nearly two decades old game, I don't think there's any pride to be taken in Champions beating the other titles in the series in term of playerbase.

Lemme tell you that these bots are actually so smart that they have their own playstyle and they even can chat with you on higher lvl difficulties. Not even joking. I never had the need with quake 3 ai to play an online game. The bots do such a great job that feels like you are playing online mode for real. *Sips* they dont make em like they used to

Quake 3's multiplayer was very memorable. It was the most thrilling of all the Quake games. I don't know why so many people hate on it. Yes, singleplayer was just fighting bots on multiplayer maps; but the multiplayer itself was so much fun. It and Unreal Tournament was a time of great rivalry; even though both games I thought were really nice. Did anyone even do CTF clans?

The aesthetic of quake was god-like. I liked that it managed a lovecraftian feel without resorting to lmao tentacles all over the place. Not to mention the final boss having 'nigger' in the name. Quake 2 and 4 are so much more generic, which is why the series went in that direction. Marketing the borg as a space threat and a generic sci fi setting is much easier than marketing weird monsters and dark knights in a somewhat fantasy/lovecraftian setting is much harder.
